sooo many variables.. but the simple answer is that you can get more money for selling it privately but it's a lot of work. the question is do you have the time and are willing to do the work?

Private. It only takes common sense to not be scammed. If you are offered a payment type you haven't heard of then don't take it. Cash is still king, cheques ok but need to be cleared before releasing car. Beware of anyone offering you a cheque for more than the value of the car and asking for the difference back or telling you to keep it as they are scammers. Failing that find the best local motor auction, put a reserve of, say, £500 more than the dealer offered and see what happens. If it doesn't make reserve the auction will phone you up with the last offer and up to you whether you accept it or not. Don't forget their fees though, ask what these are before you put it into an auction. Personally I'd put it in AutoTrader and state firmly cash on collection only and price it between what main dealer offered and the going rate on the open market. Just don't bother with eBay, complete waste of time and full of scammers.

If you have the time, sell privately. The more the car is worth, the more time the extra money you'll get will be worth.
If it's a 500 dollar rust-heap, getting 200 bucks from the dealer rather than 500 bucks from a meth-head might be worth not having it sit in your driveway for a couple of weeks with a "for sale" sign on it.
If it's a 10,000 dollar late-model used car, the difference could be thousands of dollars.

You will get much more money if you sell it privately. A dealer will always try to rip you off and give you as little money as possible. They are always looking out for their bottom line.
