Is that why we were commanded to not "take the lords name in vain" or am I interpreting that wrong?

It is human nature to appeal to a higher authority when condemning one's enemies. There were plenty of "gods" around and they would have been invoked to threaten antagonists who were out of range of more ordinary methods of punishment.

The "using God's name in vain" idea is misunderstood. The sin is not in speaking the sacred name but in pretending to speak for God or claiming that God approves of what you are saying or doing. Saying "God is on our side," is probably the most outrageous example of this.

Taking Lord's name in vain has much more to do with claiming to be the people of God and not living like the people of God.
In short, "don't be a hypocrite."

God's harshest words were to the supposedly religious.

When you say "God damn," it's like commanding God to damn something, or someone. That is "vanity," because it is vain to think you any person could command God to damn anything. Asking God is basically the same thing, from a more humble position.

Nobody spoke english back then, lead of all modern english so I'm not sure this question has a rational basis. If you mean the equivalent in sanskrit, egyptian or hebrew... but I dont know if they have such a phrase...?

I do not think they would have said it like that but evidantly they did misuse it.
