Because you are "paying" for a company to deliver CLEAN signal on a Shielded cable...that is what you are paying for....
You are also paying for them to deliver MORE channels than just the LOCAL TV stations....you're paying for that too...
Also, you pay for the DECODER box so you get MORE SERVICES, like pay per view and on-demand and HBO and Showtime.....
Now, there IS XM RADIO....and you can PAY to get your music anywhere there is an XM satellite....
Yes, you pay for their Satellite on Cable too....

Well, TV shows, commercials and movies that are displayed on cable are far more expensive to produce than it is to produce songs, radio commercial or radio shows. Radio commercials and ratings can pay off the cost of radio stations and the fees for the songs bieng played. While TV shows, commercials, and movie premiers are paid by the viewer and commercials. In the end, its all about production cost.

I haven't paid for TV in 11 years. I pulled the plug on cable TV in 2002 and I don't miss ANYTHING. These new digital TVs are great. I get 94 channels including 20 stereo music channels. I also have a library of over 1,000 blurays and DVDs. I have a great internet connection and TV Chrome extension. I have all the channels I need. All of those shows I used to love on cable TV eventually make it to YouTube in one form or another. Cable TV is a big waste of money. They're greed is going to drive them out of business. Cable TV would be much better is they operate on a la carte method. Just allow people to choose the channels they want. People are tired of paying for these over glorified package deals which just gives them a bunch of channels they're never going to watch.

You can use an antenna and get broadcast TV channels for free just like the radio.
Think of cable as compared satellite radio.

Radio uses money from advertizing to live and broadcast.
TV is free for air broadcasting (about 6-8 channels)
For creating huge network for many channels companies
need to spend a lot of money.
Air broadcasting cannot support many TV channels.
Cable and now fiber optic cable(better) can support many
TV programs.
In future all TV,Phone,Internet will use fiber optic cable.
Frequency range of fiber optic cable can support everything with super high speed.

Local TV IS free, as is local Radio. Paying for cable TV just gives you premium channels, much like paying for satellite radio gives you better radio stations. If you have an antenna, you can pick up local stations for free on your TV. You can even get HD antennas to get local HD stations for free (I think, anyways).

There are stations that are free. Just like radio has satellites to listen to those extra shows, TV has the same thing to watch those extra shows.

LOL this is a good question. You can get some rabbit ears and get certain channels for free!!! I think it is because it costs more money to make tv shows and such than it does to make radio shows.

Cable companies paid million of dollars to lay cable to the homes, so they want a return to their investment.
Cable companies pay also usage fees to local communities.

Live in the US? Want free TV? Pick an antenna for your location from this site. Otherwise you have to pay for someone to bring the signal to your home.
