As long as the dog is healthy and able to tolerate the anesthetic, it's never too old.
I'm having a dog neutered next month that's almost 13.
EDIT: iluvtorofl - His testicles are enlarged and one is kinda lumpy. I've had unneutered seniors before, his are NOT normal. Vet looked at 'em and agreed, time to whack 'em off since he's in good health otherwise.

I'm completely happy that you simply go to hold the canine. It didn't look the owner was once inquisitive about him any more. Don't know how any one might just now not want a canine they had for 4 years. 60% of male puppies will discontinue marking after they are neutered. When males are neutered at a younger age they don't mark at all.

Four years old is not old at all. Get him neutered as soon as possible to ensure a healthy happy life. If he was 9+ I would reconsider neutering because of the stress, but at four years old it is not too late.

If you have to use the word "old" three times in one sentence, it might be too late...
Kidding aside, why don't you call any vet office and ask. They'll tell you right away and you get your answer.
I don't think it's too late, but I'm not an expert and, if a vet tells you it's too late, what will you do? Will you tell the vet: "But a guy on Yahoo said...."
Pick up the phone and within 30 seconds you get your answer (it will take less time than reading answers from "experts" here.)

i'm chuffed which you bypass to maintain the canine. It did no longer look the owner replaced into interested in him to any extent further. do no longer know how all people would desire to easily no longer prefer a canine they had for 4 years. 60% of male canines will give up marking whilst they are neutered. whilst adult males are neutered at a youthful age they do no longer mark in any respect.

Age really only comes into play when the risk of anesthesia is a problem.
Four years old isn't "too old" - go ahead and get him neutered.

I just had my three year old GSD spayed. It has been three weeks and she is running and playing like a pup. It is perfectly safe to neuter him now. You will probably add a few years to his life by getting this done. This will obviously improve your quality of life too!

I would say after 6 years old it would be very unconfortable, but I'm having my almost 5 yr old Peke spade in 2 weeks, she'l be 5 in Dec. so you're not too late.

4 yrs old is NOT too old. I would be cautious, after the age of 8 years old ( 6 yrs old, in the large breeds). Basically, once they hit the ''senior'' mark, then I would be on guard about surgical procedures.
