I would say dont spend more than $5,000 on your first car. I spent $1900 and the car gets me from A to B but its not that great looking. I would say get a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla those are really good cars. Maximas are good to but they could get expensive. Hoped this helped

Only as much as you can pay in cash. If that is $4,000, then only spend $4,000.
Avoid debt at all costs. Especially on cars because they do down in value like a rock.
Look for a car that has one owner, few accidents (check carfax or something), and a good maintenance history.
A website like cars.com can be helpful.
Individuals sell cars for less than dealerships, usually.
Have your mechanic inspect the car before purchasing.

Save your money and don't buy anything under $2500, try to buy Japanese like Toyota - they last forever. Check around newspapers and craigslist, don't go to dealerships, they aren't as easy to negotiate with and will screw you. When you find a car you like, go with someone who knows cars and check everything, take test drive, ask about the condition of it. Ask what the owner has had replaced - ask him what he knows needs to be replaced. You will spend a lot less money buying a car for $3000 than you will buying one for $750 and finding out it needs new transmission or something like that.

It depends how much money you have. My first car was 45,000. If you are poor, 5,000 dollars. Toyota or something.
