Jesus was punished as traitor and trouble maker by the Romans, because the Hard line Jews didn't want him around. The Romans really didn't want anything to do with it, but influential Jews pushed hard. Now, you can take that to the bank or not, there really isn't much account about Jesus and his existence, other then from his followers, which makes it a little bit suspicious.

Before Jesus died for our sins, not one person who died ever got back into heaven, they all had at least one sin, and because they all had sinned they were not given an opportunity to be judged, they automaticaly went to hell.
When Jesus died, he went to hell and freed all those who where in hell, and they went to paradise and waited for Jesus.
The day Jesus was glorified and ascended to heaven those that were dead saw Him coming in a cloud with power and glory, and He open the first 4 seals (ages) and the book of life, and Judged them according to their works.
Their good works where made into clothes, white robes, if there were some who's bad works, were equal to their good works they had no clothes and they stood naked before Jesus.
After Judgement had been passed on each of them, they were sent to their level of heaven for their rewards.
The least level in heaven is hell.
The 5th Age (seal) was opened in 1680 BC. This was the tribulation,
Jesus 0 AD begin the 6th Age and end the 5th Age 280 AD
The 6th Age (seal) was open 0 AD and the names of those found worthy were written in the book of life. This was the time of great tribulation.

Because the payment for sin is death.
In other words, because you have sinned, you have given up your right to immortality. Your body AND your spirit must die...
But the gift of God is eternal life.
If the payment for sin is death, how could God give you, a sinner, eternal life? By taking the sins of the world upon Himself, and paying for them, going down into the grave for us, and giving immortality to those who had died, looking forward to His coming.
So, what happens to those who have not, or will not, accept this gift for themselves?
Well...they die. The second death, that is...no hell, no "separation from God" (anything separated from God cannot exist), they simply

Satan is still spreading his original lie:
"You won't really die"...
And millions of people go to their grave believing it.

The prophet Jesus was not crucified.
He was taken up to heaven, and will be back. Muslims will follow Jesus on the righteous path.

15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
(Only Jesus could die for our sins because he was sinless! He is the most precious being in Heaven and only the ultimate sacrifice could save us if we accept Jesus as our personal Saviour.)
