I can guarantee you that Van Damme got his *** kicked quite a few times. First, you have to forget all your reasons for wanting to be good at martial arts, your not going to be famous with a selfish attitude like that. Best way to get good is through hard work and practice, like a good portion of your life devoted to it. "Famous" is a whole other story. There is no point where you just suddenly get awarded fame. You have to catch the media's eye in order to do that, which is even harder than become a master at martial arts.

Also, you can learn more, and improve more, from loosing than you do from winning. Its all in your attitude.

To answer your question basically, have a nice face, body, and good enough flexibility to do all those flashy martial arts moves they use in cinema like high spinning back kicks or high side kicks. You do not need to be a real fighter if you want to be an action movie star like Van Damme. Take up some acting classes and get an agent.

If you want to become famous as a serious fighter than enter those MMA tournaments and go for the UFC.

Although I fully support a young man's dream I have to say that you need to grow up a bit and look the realities in they eye.
Even the best talent won't get you in the film business (that's what van Damme is in) if they don't like your face.
Hundreds of participants in a tournament, only a few win, do you think there would be any tournaments if everybody apart from the winners are considered faeces?
Van Damme is not that good, he is a movie dude, wires, ropes, choreography and all the rest, how often do they have to shoot a particular scene, do you know?
Keep training, but train smart, be proud of yourself, keep your head up, be respectful but confident, humble in victory and gracious in defeat, this will earn you a reputation greater than anything...
