When one minute their telling you how much they love their God and then their off doing drugs and sleeping around? I live in the Midwest, it is astonishing. You'll find that 9 out of 10 or so college age kids claim themselves Christian, but these are the people who crowd all the over the top parties and are often cruel to others. The only semi-nice, real people I know around here are those I'm friends with and play music with, most atheist or agnostic. Some life change their religion has brought upon them....

I find it exceedingly difficult to take them seriously.

You're right! Specially because it is not written in the Bible that religious people will be saved. Religion doesn't save anybody... Only Jesus saves and salvation is achieved upon learning from God and His Words.
The Bible also mentions that we are all sinners.
It seems to me you've been looking for the "bad examples" to support your unclear point of view... Why don't you try to do the opposite? Become a Christian and let Jesus and His Words change YOU and then be a good example, instead of wasting your time trying to prove sth you can't!

You cannot genralize that all people who call themselves Christians act in the same way. And maybe those people are calling them Christians but they are not living their lives accordingly. People take titles and dont live up to what they mean. Anybody can call themselves a Christian but it is those who chose to have a relationship with God and live righteous lives are the ones that you should take seriously. Sorry that you have a poor opinion like that. Hopefully you can find others who can change your mind.

I also went to school in the midwest and noticed the same thing. People would claim to believe in religion and morals and all that and the weekends they were all getting hammered in the bars and sleeping around.

Yes, it is hard to take religious people seriously. For me in fact, it is impossible.

Lots of people make noise about being Christian and then don't act like it, no denying that. But I think that outside of the college party scene, there are lots & lots of really decent people who "walk it like they talk it". I'm a 39 year old Christian, father, professional. Nearly all of the good parents, good teachers, good employees, etc that I know are practicing Christians. When I play Church softball (vs. regular softball leagues) there's not NEARLY the drinking, smoking, yelling, swearing, etc that I've seen in other leagues.

Sounds like more of a demographics thing to me.

I know what you mean. Now there are @$$#0L3$ from every religion, group, or lack of religion as there are nice people. But I do get your point in that you dont have to be religious to be a nice person. Unfortunately according to some people, you need to do more than that. But I highly agree that not being religious doesnt mean being evil.

I think in America Christianity is just the "default" religion for a lot of people. Those who haven't taken the time to really think about it just figure that their vague beliefs that there is a God and Jesus is a nice man who will let them go to a "heaven" when they die mean they are Christian.

What you're seeing is the difference between people who are Christians in their head, and people who have actually felt the change in their heart. Lots of people call themselves Christians because they were raised with it, or because they believe in it. But it takes more than believing in it to actually be a Christian.

Believing that art exists doesn't make me an artist, does it?

Well, believing in God and Jesus Christ doesn't make a person a Christian.

The Bible can help you to find Jesus True followers. Yes we are all imperfect and have to battle fleshly desires but real followers of Christ work hard to prove their faith, It is important that we worship Jehovah in the way that he approves. Many people believe that all religions are pleasing to God, but the Bible does not teach that. It is not even enough just to claim to be a Christian. Jesus said: “Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will.” To have God’s approval, therefore, we must learn what God requires of us and do it. Jesus called those who do not do God’s will “workers of lawlessness.” (Matthew 7:21-23) Like counterfeit money, false religion has no real value. Even worse, such religion is actually harmful.

They wear a religious label because it's the done thing. They don't want to be ostracised or worse.
I suspect that the 86% Christian majority in the USA consists of a large proportion of label wearers.

One of the problems with people. Just about no one lives up to the standards they give themselves by claiming to be religious.
