This person owes me a bit of money and part of his excuse for missing a deadline was that he was in jail. How do I find out if he's telling the truth?

Contact the facility he was allegedly in. But either way his/her deadline is still up...tell 'em to cough up the dough NOW, while NOT in jail!!

Ask him for a copy of the police report, and if he gives you a copy, call the police station to find out if it is real or a forgery.
