i know bear will general scat in the same area along the same trail, but what about deer? this past tuesday while putting the finishing touches on my stand for tomorrow's PA archery opener i saw LOTS of buck droppings along one trail. must have been 6 piles in about a 12 yard stretch.

That would be a good area to watch. At least this way you have a sure sign of activity. If you hunt there watch for other movement in the area. You may have to move a little to get a better shot.

there is no proof positive way to tell the difference between the 2 other than a guess because of size and amounts of droppings.
Big size big piles bigger deer is about all but add other signs together to figure out if it may be a buck using the area.
Look for single bed area's follow up with hoof size scrapes rubs and visual sightings can help find the bucks zone.
If I find this pile zone often in the same area I will back trail it to find the bedding area or resting area that they came from.
Deer will usually deficate soon after getting up from beds but also could be a staging area where deer congregate so follow up on the sign.
I do not like to hunt to near a bedding area for fear of spooking the deer so I try to place a stand around 100 yards from a bedding area to be safe.Good luck!!

I know of no way to tell if it is buck or doe droppings but one thing is for sure, there are a LOT of deer using that trail and it is a great spot for your stand. I also don't know the game laws in PA but in many states, both sexes are legal for taking with a bow. If this is the caase in PA then it doesn't make any difference what the sex of the deer is unless you are hunting exclusively for a trophy. Good luck!!!

No way to know for sure if they are Buck or Doe droppings, but that much in such a small area is a great sign.It had to be left there by "several" Deer using the same trail.Your stand is in the right place. The only thing better would be if the piles were "steaming"...lol Make sure you use cover scent on your boots going in and coming out. Don't want them to scent you...Good Luck Tomorrow............

That means that the deer were in the area when they had to take a dump.

There is no way to tell what sex or size of deer by the droppings. The shape, size & consisty is dependent on what they are eating & how much water they have drank. Could you tell the difference in human droppings?

Deer "usually" feed through the night and take a dump on thier way to & before getting to thier bedding site. Of course when they gotta go they just go.

At any rate setting up close to allot of droppings is a good Idea.......
