That's illegal. You should get at least 24 hours notice unless it's an absolute emergency.

That is illegal. Ask to see a work ID. Talk to the apartment manager and give a full description on who they are. If the manager doesn't make a big deal about it (doesn't talk to the people looking at it, change your locks, call the police...) then call the police and say someone have been coming in without notice. This is technically breaking in. It sounds like they are scoping it out to steal stuff later. 24 hour (most places is 48 hours unless an emergency) notice is required.

As an etiquette question, yes its rude to come uninvited or unannounced.

I would be outraged.... what if your sleeping.... or have a baby that is sleeping!
They can't do that....
YOU TELL THEM NO!
Say...........
"I'm sorry you can't come in right now... Its not a good time. You do not have to give a reason. Tell them... come back tommorrow at this time and I will let you in... I require 24 hour notice before you come to visit or do maintenance. I am very busy right now."... Then shut the door. They cannot just 'come in'. If they have a problem with it .... TOUGH SH*T!

Look out the peep hole, if it is them, act like your not home.
What a bunch of losers to just come to your HOME unannounced. People are so rude. Grrrr!

Here is what i found when I entered "Renters rights" in the search engine for the state of California......

8. CAN MY LANDLORD ENTER MY APARTMENT WITHOUT MY PERMISSION?

You have a basic right of privacy which your landlord should
respect. Your landlord may enter your place only in the following
cases:

-- in an emergency.

-- to make necessary or agreed upon repairs, decorations,
alterations or improvements; supply necessary or agreed
upon services; or show the unit to prospective buyers, tenants
or repair workers.

-- when you have abandoned or given up the premises.

-- as a result of a court order. (Sec. 1954 of CC)

Unless it is an emergency or impractical, your landlord should
give you reasonable notice of his/her plans to enter, and enter only
during normal business hours. Twenty-four hours is usually
considered reasonable notice.

If your landlord seriously violates your right to privacy, you
may have the basis for a lawsuit. You also might want to contact the
police when the violation occurs; while the police often will not take
direct action, your report to them can help document your complaint
if you take the case to court.

Ok I had this problem too. I was gettin NO notice and in Ohio where I live its 24 hours. You need to pull up online your state revised codes and see if its legal. LEARN YOUR RENTERS RIGHTS!! You can pull those up online too. That is very important. There is privacy laws against this in some states. If this keeps up and is against the law, you can sue the pants off them. Just as they have rules and a contract you have to follow, you also have rules they have to follow. They usually forget to leave those out of the contracts. Even if its in the contract that they can enter, even if you signed it...doesnt mean squat if its against the law. Good luck!

I used to live in a place like this.. they have to give you 24 hours notice unless there is like a fire or a flood or some emergency. They cant just come over use the key and come in. I would call the cops.. or fair housing... i hate apartments!!

If it's an A/C problem that could possibly affect other units via leakage then they have a right to enter but they must make an effort to contact you first, but the sink thing.. unless there was a leak in the apt. below you they shouldn't do anything unless you request a work order.

Check your lease and see what it says about maintenance or other apartment employees having access to your apartment.

I was in bed asleep one morning and heard the doorbell ring. Before I could get my robe on, the maintenance man had opened the door and was on his way down the hall. I met him with a machete aimed right at his head. I had no problems with apartment personnel entering my apartment after that.

Check you lease that you signed when you first moved in. It should have something written about landlord entering the unit. If my memory is correct you should get a phone call 24 hours in advance, I am not sure if you can decline them from entering.

No they have no right to just come in without giving you 24 hour notice. If the company i worked for did that we would be in big trouble without giving 24hr notice.

Hit them over the head with a baseball bat, call the police, when the person regains consciousness, and the police get there, just act like you thought they were trying to rob you. They will never do it again.
