I wonder if people who consistently run late, I'm talking 30 minutes or more, are trying to be rude. Or are they just not able to plan ahead? Or what is it?

Mostly unable to plan ahead. Didn't plan for traffic to be bad, didn't think that shirt would still be wet and had to dry it longer, the baby had to be changed, had to get gas... that's all poor planning. I usually leave early because life happens.

Some people do it to be fashionable. My sister is like that. She always wants to seem like she has other things to do then life happens on top of that. So she will leave 10 minutes late and end up at least 30 minutes late. Drives me crazy.

I'm not sure about the ethnic base you might be dealing with, but being on time can be very culture specific. In some countries, you would really stand out if you were on time. My Indian friend likes to joke about "Indian Standard Time" because people pretty much always come an hour after the event's scheduled start time. While a culture difference may not be what you are dealing with right now, it is a good thing to keep in mind in the future.

those who are consistantly late have their priorities backwards and are selfish. They don't realize and don't care that others are being inconvienced by having to wait for them. It has a snowball effect to others plans. It is very rude. I always make it a point to be either on time or even early. If I know I am going to be late due to something out of my control(traffic) I ALWAYS call to let someone know what is going on, even if I'm literally 2 or 3 minutes late I still call and do my best to get there ASAP and I apologize for my tardiness.

I wish I knew. I know someone who was constantly late to work and covering for her got really old, really quick. She always apologized, but then, the next day, here she is again, 30 minutes late. No, she didn't get fired. That won't happen.
Great article on the Today show website.

They aren't trying to be rude, they just are rude. My sister is the absolute worst about this. She was late to her own birthday party, job interviews, shopping excursions and other family events. It's like she has to make an entrance so everyone knows she's there - and I trust we'd know she was there if she had arrived on time.

They are self-absorbed and care only about their schedules not how they could be inconveniencing someone else.

They aren't trying to be rude, they're just outright rude. That's all there is to it. They don't care enough about any other people involved. They are the type of person who thinks everyone else will wait for them. This is the type of person who, when his or her friends have had enough and decide to teach a lesson, don't get the lesson. Frustrating people, aren't they?

I think habitually late people are selfish.
And I think that if the party is a 7 pm, you should tell them that the party starts at 6:30, so they will be on time.

I think that it's a time-management issue.

Many people don't really think they need as much time as they really do to get ready for an appointment or social function and end up chronically late.
