depends on your definition of chi.

the problem with the "chi debate" is that chi doesn't have a uniform definition.

some people refer to chi as realistic and quantifiable things that are perfectly natural such as: adrenalin, technique/structure, power generation through optimal use of muscle stregth by using the strongest muscles to generate more power, or even better blood flow which leads to better operation of your cardiovascular system.

however the references to it as a "mystic energy", or some kind of undiscovered energy one can harnass to make them stronger or hit people across the room and make no touch kos or generate force fields to protect them from harm are 150% bullshido (a load of crap).

There is no debate or myth concerning Qi.

The term means Breath or Air... You know, the stuff we take in through our lungs?!

The mechanism is very complicated. When you breath, the oxygen is absorbed through the airsacks in the lungs.

Qi Gong accelerates the oxygen when it enters the bloodstream. The gyrating movements cause the electrons of the your cells to accelerate because of the supercharged oxygen. The result is Qi.

Difficult, huh?

If you still have a hard time believing, find a REAL Qi Gong teacher and ask him to teach you an exercise to develop Qi.

It's not one of those "works only if you believe in it" issues... it is real...

It's the breath of life that God blew into the nostrils of Adam to make him a living soul.

I know it's real, but it's a complex concept that corresponds to certain Oriental cosmologies.
My thoughts on it is that it is a useful concept to use to train your mind to control your body in certain subtle ways. Part of it is psychology. We did this exercise once where someone is coming straight at you so you just cut in front of them with a sudden, swift movement of your arm. Most people will fall backwards most of the time. The official explanation is Ki, but the fact of the matter is it's very hard to control the reflex of getting out of the way when you're running towards someone and they flail their arm in front of your face. The sudden jerky movement you have to do to avoid that blow is enough to throw you off balance if the other person controls the angle at which they expect you to dodge.
Other things involve escaping a person's grip, pushing down a person without using much strength, etc... I am skeptic myself so my reflex is to think some sort of body mechanics is involved, but thinking in terms of Ki does help get the proper mental state to do these things.
I don't believe in controlling people from a distance with Ki, or throwing ki at them to damage them, etc..., but I do believe the concept is helpful. I found it's best not to think too much about it and just accept what works and what doesn't.
Also, I would not rely on ki exercises to defend myself in an assault. They're just that, exercises meant to tune you in to the more subtle aspects of internal arts. You still have to apply techniques. The idea of ki can make your techniques smoother, however and will allow you to use less effort while performing them.

And I know it's not just suggestion, because it works on my cat as well. (Just for the record, I don't harm my cat - but I found sending ki was actually a good way to get him to stop gripping me when he started latching on to my hand.)

as answered by several others ,yes it is real . i have personally experienced it ,many times. Chinese and Japanese systems use it very effectively . i was practising Wing-Chun with a friend of mine ,Chi-Sau and he turned up the pressure and i felt enveloped by darkness, that's the only way i can describe it . another occasion i was watching my Sifu practising, performing energy drills and it was like someone sucking energy out of my head, weird or what .i have hit hard and felt the difference between a surface hit and a Chi punch ,got to be felt to be believed

Yes, I have seen evidence of this during martial arts training. I personally saw a black belt throw a punch 10 feet away from the person and the other person nearly fall down. This was not rehearsed, and the person that nearly fell was blind folded in the middle of a room.

I dont have a real answer for this but I do have a simple test for you to try. It isnt a trick as far as I can tell... but maybe someone can disprove me...

Try lifting someone who is just standing there. And then after that try lifting the same person - but have them imagine dropping their energy/weight/feelings down and not "want" to be lifted (they dont change anything physical!)...

Try it.

Yes, but it's not like the stuff you see in Dragonball Z. It's your internal energy. Everyone has it, but you gotta work to focus it. I usually use it for demonstrations, such as breaking bricks or breaking a board on my neck.

NO , If people could call upon an energy source other than the purely biological tool available to you then athletes everywhere would be using it.
The myth however is a functional tool for developing concentration/focus.
