large communities of people in different parts of the world avoid one or other type of these valuable foods, and vegetarians reject all of them. One of the meats which is widely and vigorously rejected is pork. Its strict avoidance by Muslims and practising Jews is well known, but other communities in Africa, Central and Southern Asia and Oceania also reject pigmeat (see Simoons, 1961, for a discussion of the cultural geography of avoidance of pork and other flesh foods).
Various theories have been advanced to explain the origin and rationale of avoidance of pork and other foods of animal origin. One of the several hypotheses stipulates that the prohibition of pork resulted from a collective experience of disease (or diseases) transmitted or caused by pigmeat in antiquity or ancient times. Various recent findings in food hazards, zoonoses and risk factors related to chronic degenerative diseases have been cited in support of, or against, this theory. Of course, folk medicine and popular food lore of various countries where pork is consumed, are also full of anecdotes ("wisdom") on this subject.

The pigs that my grandfather raised ate corn and feed he bought from a mill.
Some pork meats - sausage, ham, shoulder (bbq), is high fat. Some people do not eat pork because of that.
Pork chops are called the "other white meat." It is lower in fat.
Some don't eat it because of religious reasons.

Some religions prohibit eating pork and say it is "unclean". I think these dietary rules laid out by various religions are hocus pocus and I am a somewhat religious person myself. I just don't believe that what you eat or do not eat matters to God.

Religious reasons mainly but also dietary preferences, before proper refridgeration and cooking techniques it could be harmful to eat pork that was improperly kept or cooked, which turned a lot of people off it.

Now you tell me that most of Africa hates pork? Then how come I see news reports of villages having pigs used as barter and during ceremonoies and is eaten. Muslims can do what they want as long as they leave me alone.

To abstain from consuming pork means to care about one’s health. The omnivorous pig, being by far the most slovenly and greedy domestic animal, devours virtually anything, including human excrement, including dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, garbage, and other pigs.
and is a breeding ground for various malignant microbes and parasites. Consumption of pork may result in many serious diseases. We are safe to assume that one of the main reasons behind the prohibition of pork consumption was the spread of trichinosis, - a disease caused by trichinella spiralis, a parasitic roundworm.
"You are what you eat" - Native American proverb
In folklore terms, eating the meat of the pig is said to contribute to lack of morality and shame, plus greed for wealth, laziness, indulgence, dirtiness and gluttony. We insult a person by calling him or her a "Pig" when they demonstrate these characteristics.
The bible says:
“You shall not eat any abominable things <…> And the pig, because it has a cloven hoof but does not chew the cud, you shall regard as unclean. You shall not eat their flesh or even touch their dead carcasses” (Deuteronomy, XIV: 8).

religious reasons and also because pork is one if not the most dieased meat out there you can eat. It is very bad for you to eat. It causes auto-immune disorders. I would highly recommend not eating pork but if you must, seriously cutting your intake.
