What are low blood counts?
A blood count (Consist of hemoglobin, hematocrit and Complete Red Blood count) is a measurement of the number of blood cells an individual has in circulation based on laboratory evaluation of a blood sample. Blood is composed of three basic blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. You should have billions of these blood cells circulating throughout your body. However, certain circumstances may cause you to have fewer cells than is considered normal, a condition which is called “low blood counts”. The laboratory test that is conducted to measure the number of blood cells is called a complete blood count, or CBC.
What causes low blood counts?
The most common reason cancer patients experience low blood counts is as a side effect of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to destroy cancer cells. Chemotherapy works by destroying cells that grow rapidly, a characteristic of cancer cells. Unfortunately, chemotherapy also affects normal cells that grow rapidly, such as cells in the bone marrow that produce red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The patients suffering from Cervical Cancer have very low blood counts due to Chemotherapy.

Low hb hct and red cell count are all about of red cell quality and quantity. If the level are below normal number we call anemia, and need detail analysis the blood test result and decided what type of anemia is.But general speaking anemia due to chronic or malignant disease can be sum up as;1)chronic blood lose.2)slow productivty.3)not enough material for blood building. For cervical ca can lose blood from the Cancer side.Due to wide spread of the ca or under chemo.or radiat therapy, the toxic material can suppres the bone narrow(red cell factory) also due to general ill feeling end up poor appetite and poor absorption end-up not enough material(iron,b12,protient and other) to build normal red cell.

"Anemia commonly occurs in cancer patients, either as a direct result of the cancer or as a side effect of cancer treatment. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy and blood loss during surgery are all common causes of anemia in cancer patients. Chemotherapy drugs kill rapidly dividing cells in the body, including cancer cells and normal cells, such as cells in the bone marrow responsible for red blood cell production. Over 60% of patients treated with chemotherapy develop anemia.[1]
Anemia occurs because patients can't produce enough red blood cells or because red blood cells are lost through bleeding or destroyed faster than they can be produced. The production of red blood cells in the bone marrow is called erythropoiesis. Erythropoiesis is controlled by red blood cell growth factors. Erythropoietin is the major blood cell growth factor that increases red blood cell production in the bone marrow. Erythropoietin is produced by cells in the kidney. When kidney cells detect a decrease in tissue oxygen, erythropoietin is released into the circulation. The end result is increased red blood cell production in the bone marrow. Anemia can be prevented or corrected by using erythropoietin, or by giving a blood transfusion."
