I see many questions trying to disprove people's beliefs. I wonder what people are looking to get in resonse to stating something like... "Here is the proof that what you believe in is FALSE". Be it against christians, muslims, atheists, etc. I see the same thing happening. The people that believe what you believe will agree. The people that don't believe what you believe will call you a dope.

Are people assuming that they'll convert someone out of their religion or lack thereof? Because i think most people sign off of yahoo answers still believing what they believed before so, again, what's the point of even posting certain things...

I guess some people just enjoy poking fun, but some people seem really determined to show you the error of your belief. So i'm honestly wondering what it's for? Are people trying to "expose your beliefs for what they are" or something? because more than likely, you've heard everything out there.

What are people's motives for these questions??

Thank you! Sarcasm, ridicule, and hostility will never convert someone to a different belief system. As a matter of fact, why would I want to be like people who use these methods?
I participate in R&S to find questions that are posted by sincere seekers for truth, and to attempt to respectfully answer their questions as well as I can, in hopes of facilitating their search. It is disturbing to see the lack of respect that is demonstrated on R&S by people whose purported interests are Religion and Spirituality.

Well, this is a Religion and Spirituality forum, and in answering a question, I will quote the Bible. Am I trying to convert someone? Not at all, I am just using my basis of faith, the Bible, to answer a question. By quoting the Bible, you can understand where I am coming from, rather than a standpoint of "I believe it, so it must be true!", and this stance can be taken by both Christians and non-Christians alike. By quoting the Bible, I am at least providing a means of verifying my answers, or a basis for someone to continue with further study if they liked my answer, and want to investigate more for themselves.

And yes, I do agree that most people will leave here with the same attitude as when they posted, but if they weren't searching, they wouldn't be here, albeit some members are here just to make fun of Christians, or try to offend us. For those people, all I say is "God loves you!"

I sincerely believe that all religions are insane - at least the face-value, dogmatic, "exoteric" versions of religion "for the masses." Not only insane, but dangerous. Could we have a better example than the situation in the Middle East of what happens when people take their religion too seriously? So I admit that I DO come on here to destructively criticize religion, not so much to convince people that their beliefs are crazy - because it's useless trying to teach people who need to be taught - but just to get that "alternative" POV out there. No, not everybody in America is a sectarian bigot with blinders on.

When people of a religion lie about their belief or when a religion lies about other religions, the truth needs to be told. Too many people are being deliberately misled. Maybe someone will really consider the truth, history and examples given before they make such a horrible mistake as to believe the lies.

God Bless.

There are 2 different concepts you are throwing into one pot. A belief is not a proof of anything. It is simply a belief. Proof of something is not a belief it is a fact. I am not trying to convince some one to BELIEVE what I believe. I am simply presenting facts in the hope that intelligence will prevail.

I try to interact with people and see what our culture is saying and what everyone in it is saying about God and the supernatural. In addition, I am somewhat saddened by the lack of critical thinking by most people. It seems that most people have accepted beliefs without really thinking through all of the implications.

They are insecure about thier own beliefs so they attempt to reinforce what they are taught to believe in by denouncing others or claiming what they believe in is the only truth.

People with true faith don't do this. It's only the faux believers.

Of course, some people just post nonsense to get a rise out of other people.

I can't answer to the motives of others, but personally speaking, I ask questions because I want to make people think a little bit. I don't have any answers, but sometimes having questions is more important.
