That would be glossolalia.
To my knowledge, no evidence for for the so-called 'speaking in tongues' has ever proved it to be anything other than 1) a psychiatric disorder, or 2) a fabrication by the speaker.
Any spoken language has certain linguistic patterns and such that can, with time, be 'decoded' into the observer's own language. This is how it is possible for one to learn foreign languages, and also how synthetic languages are created.
However, in the case of fabrication, there tends to be no pattern that can be attributed to actual speech; it is, quite frankly, nonsense sounds. The fact that the 'tongues' are always in the speaker's accent and inflection draws suspicion, as well. One would expect that, if he were suddenly and miraculously gifted with the ability to speak a new language (even if it was one nobody had ever spoken before), he would at least get the accent right.

Wow.
Begging the question. Drink!
"Speaking in tongues" isn't a miracle. They are not "suddenly are able to speak in a lanquage they have never studied or never seen, and understand every word they are speaking," nor is it "a true and common occurance." It is gullible people babbling incoherently.
Seriously, try reading a real book sometime, not a pack of Bronze Age fairy tales.

The gift of 'tongues' simply means 'language'. What was the need for tongues?. How could the apostles go out and preach to all the world when they only spoke 2 languages? It was a miraculous event. There are only 3 examples of speaking in tongues in the Bible(Acts2,10,19) The day of Pentecost came and they were all in one accord. Then, they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and spoke in tongues. The disciples understood what they were preaching. There were at least 15 different language groups represented in the crowd that day; as a result thousands were converted. The purpose of this gift is not to babble nonsense, but rather to have the power for preaching.
It is so sad to see 'Glossolalia' in many modern day charismatic churches. (Babbling repetitive nonsense, jumping up and down as if they have the spirit) They have no idea how much damage their behavior does to religion. They fail to understand that the gift of language is for the purpose of proclaiming the word of God. For example: God gives you the capability to speak to someone in a language you never spoke before in order to communicate the gospel.(just like the day of Pentecost)
The genuine gift of tongues is an example of God's infinite power to spread the gospel of salvation.

there is not any such ingredient as a miracle. maximum occurrences, extraordinary as they might look, could be rationally defined by way of technology and something is going to "$hit happens" Miracle (in accordance to Webster's dictionary) is: a million: an stunning journey manifesting divine intervention in human affairs 2: a very impressive or unusual journey, ingredient, or accomplishment 3: Christian technology: a divinely organic phenomenon experienced humanly because of the fact the fulfillment of non secular regulation

I did no know "tongues" is a language. All I have ever seen is people screaming "blah woo ghee wooom bluuu blah" and they call it speaking in tongues. I didn't know there were instances of people speaking other languages they were never exposed to, like Hebrew for example. But I would be interested in any links you can provide that documents this.

Simple. DELUSION. And no, these people are not talking in any real language. It's gibberish. I had Latin forced on me in school, and when one woman claimed to speak such in tongue, I promptly found her out.
The mainly monolingual American would not know another language if it bit him/her in the a**. They just say, "Oh God, told me it was Aramaic," because most people living can't disprove it.

It is called glossolalia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossolalia
It is related to the music style commonly called Jazz Scat. Since the spoken word often does not have enough "bandwith" to express intense emotions, they often must be sung using word with or without meaning.
That is the same reason why Opera and Musicals are so popular, because when you feel emotions that strongly they must be sung and not said.

um, i can speak in tongues.
so can a 1 year old.
its all an act. get real dude.
explain why only specific denominations of christianity experience speaking in tongues. in the 12 years i went to church i never saw one person do this. however in the denominations that practice this, the whole church will begin speaking in tongues. explain for me why only people who practice this belief do it, when it should be a gift from the holy spirit, meaning people from EVERY denomination should bust out in different tongues.
its only for attention. any moron can speak in tongues.
