Strangely, the anwer is no. Tuna is definitely a higher quality food than Meow Mix, which is junk (Tuna is all meat, but Meow Mix is mostly corn!) But the bad part about tuna as a diet for a cat is that it's all the cat eats - and tuna for humans is packaged without the entrails, bones, etc., stuff that a cat would eat.

In the wild a cat eats entrails, kidneys, heart, etc. that carry a lot of vitamins and minerals, but that's not in tuna that is packaged for human beings. So over time, your cat would become malnourished.

So it's better to buy some tuna cat food, tuna meant for cats because it has entrails ground up in it, plus vitamins and stuff for cats. It's also cheaper than human cans of tuna!

And yes, the canned food should help your cat loose weight. It worked for my cat!

Canned tuna for people has salt in it, too much for the cat's kidneys if given even three times a week.

Cat food with tuna is better, but it's still not the best since a cat can get so obscessed with eating tuna he refuses to eat anything else. Find a good wet food, if you like. I can recommend low carb like 9-Loves Super Supper (their only good one) or the large cans of Maxi Cat, or NutroMax. Chicken soup for the cat lovers soul is good. There are several others.

No, nothing but tuna is bad for cats. They don't get the nutrition they need. I give my cat 1 teaspoon of tuna a day as a treat, that's it. She's lived 14 years so far.

Get a good dry food for weight control and make that the primary food source. Give a bit of tuna on top as an incentive to eat the food.

People food is for people. Tuna for humans has way to much protein which can in the long run make the cat go into renal failure. How would I know, I have had cats for 30 some odd years and have asked the vets all the questions that I can possibly ask over the years. Having said that please do not give human food to any animal. Call your vet if you are concerned about the weight problem and they will be more than happy to recommend a cat food that is right for your cat.
Good Luck!!

NO!!!! straight tuna is NOT better. they will not get all the nutrients they need from just tuna, and without dry food, they will get tartar on the teeth which will be just like you get on yours that will need to be scaled off if you want your cat to have teeth. Check lables and feed your cat a well ballanced diet. This includes free choice on the dry food and maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 can of good quality canned food of any flavor your cat prefers. Mine only like Friskies white fish with tuna, loaf style only..picky eaters, as many cats are.

Get him a weight loss dry cat food and supplement with tuna occasionally, canned sardines would be better. The sardines are high in taurine which cats need. The best diet for cats is a raw food diet. For information about that get the book The Encyclopedia of Natural Pet Care by C J Puotinen. It tells how to feed the raw food diet and the health advantages involved. I have 17 indoor cats so I don't feed it exclusively but since I started supplementing my cats dry with it my vet bills are almost non existent.

A grain-free or other low-carb canned cat food is a suitable diet for a cat. We have our fat one on a low-carb canned diet to help her lose weight (vet recommended this, called it "Catkins"). I think tuna's an acceptable occasional treat, but a dry cat food is better than tuna for a full-time diet. Below is a link to high-quality grain-free and other low-carb foods. Our cat likes Wellness the best, but there are lots of brands.

Dry food doesn't clean the teeth.

Wet food doesn't rot the teeth.

Wet food doesn't cause diarrhea.

Tuna causes vitamin deficiencies and if too much is fed can lead to a condition - I believe it's steatitus? I'm a little foggy on the name.

Even cat-food based fish should not be fed more than 1-3 times per week.

Your cat needs food made for cats as it has essential vitamins and nutrients for cats. Find a good brand of reduced calorie cat food and always have water available. Feed him twice a day, and don't let him graze. Slow weight loss is the best as this will not raise havoc with his system like a rapid weight loss will.

Tuna alone will not be enough, it will not have the variety of proteins and other vitamins that cat food would have. If you want your cat to lose weight stop feeding him so much. Put him on a diet and only feed him the amounts suggested for his size on the bag...if you let him decide how much to eat he will of course keep eating if he loves to eat. And no wet food, any type is not the best for any animal, it's very bad on their teeth and gums, causing major rotten teeth and dental issues, once in awhile as a treat or a little along with dry is fine.
