Seems that dress codes are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Good riddance, as far as I'm concerned! I remember pantyhose being a requirment for ladies at my first job. I could never understand how putting your legs in sausage-like casings makes one work better. Where do you stand on the issue?

So in essence, we are judging a book by its cover...
Dress the part and you'll be perceived as professional. What about quality of work? Sure, execs look professional, but trust me, their works being done by their admin asst's. This smells of pure BS to me and only strengthens my belief that Corporate America is a JOKE.

phguy34 - There are more ways than one to show you are willing to go the extra mile. Being reliable, showing up on time, completing tasks, speaking properly and having a good attitude in general can accomplish the same results. I don't wear a suit, but trust me, I am far from lazy or sloppy. Forgive me for being blunt, but your statement seems narrow minded and outdated, even.

bubsy - I'm deducing you don't get a lot of dates nor do you have the faintest idea of how an office works. People go to the ones who can get them what they need. Getting the desired result is what I get paid for.

where i work, there is a company mandated dress code. however it does allow you the freedom to express yourself in your dress to a certain, reasonable extent. the dress code states that women must be "professionally dressed" it does not state what you can and cannot wear, but assumes that as an adult, you should know better. if u didn't show up to the interview dressed as if you were already working for the company, the interview would never happen.

both women and men are expected to wear hosiery: it does not state if this needs to be pantyhose, tights, trouser socks, knee highs, or regular socks. it only states that it be "business attire". so going to hot topic and buying tights with skulls and crossbones on it would probably be a no-no. =)

nobody complains about the dress code since we were all hired with the understanding that we needed to abide by it if we wanted to become employed by and remain employed by our company. i really don't see what the big deal is... i guess if my company changed the dress code next week to include clown noses and afro wigs, i would have a problem.

i work in the travel industry, in an office environment. personally, i have a lot of customer/vendor/industry interaction so i need to look my best all the time. not getting or losing an important account simply because i didn't dress well would be completely unacceptable to both myself and the company. i expect those that work under me to feel the same.

Dress codes are in place because today's young lady don't have a clue as to what to wear in the work place or any where else for that matter. If it was up to these ladies they would come in to work like they were going to the beach or like a bag lady, and in their minds they are thinking," I look good".As for not understanding how putting your legs in sausage casing......let me tell you this.Look around you.If any thing looks sausage like,it's all these ladies wearing a tight half shirt with the required spare tire jiggling as they walk about in their painted toes and flip flops. Pantyhose at least keeps some of the weight from bouncing about while making the legs appear flawless.P.S. You can be as competent as hell, but if you look so-so,people will look for the well dressed person in the office to help them.Sorry, but the human species is a visual creature.

The last office environment I worked in had a dress code for the personnel that was constantly violated (in bad ways).

Belly-revealing shirts and low-rise pants have no place in a business environment. These were only some of the violations.

Reasons I LIKE reasonable dress codes:

1. Other people's lack of taste in casualwear makes it necessary.
2. Formality encourages good manners/professional behavior.
3. Exudes air of respect about the job/workplace to clients and customers. Image counts in business.

Dress codes are PART of what makes someone professional, NOT the ONLY thing that does. Dressing professionally shows that person is willing to go that extra step to represent themselves and the company.

I guess people don't understrand what 'class' is anymore. I guess being lazy and sloppy is the level most people shoot for... What a shame!

They had 'normal haircut' in the dress code before so Im not thinkin they would be down with mesh shirts.

Only people in production (I work for an organic/kosher bakery). I am Quality Control, so I can wear anything I want, but I choose to wear co. supplied uniforms. You'd be surprised how little I have to do laundry now (the uniform service washes the uniforms).

You dress for success. Yes it does matter, If you dress like you don't care then what image and attitude do you portray. Successfull people don't dress like there not apart of the team.
