As with many religion you have to watch out for over-generalization.
SOME denominations of Muslim cannot depict images of SOME living things because of the taboo about not having graven images.
ADD: Their are moderates who believe it is alright to have images people and even Mohammad (saws)'s relatives.
There are also extremists who believe that no one should be allowed to depict any images Mohammad (saws) and have actively attacked or destroyed other cultures and their depictations of him.
Caricatures of Mohammad technically would not be "graven images" but not surprisingly most Muslims agree that they are offensive.
ADD ADD: I picked this up from another post; pictures of Mohammad (saws) http://www.zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/

I would go even further and wonder if abstract art was allowable. Abstract art is still art "of" a subject (often living), even if the link between the artwork and its subject is not immediately obvious.

Not only abstract, but I believe that there must be a flaw in it.
I believe the argument is that to produce a perfect pattern it to produce a picture of God, because god is perfect.
But I am willing to be corrected on that.

Landscapes, trees, mountains, oceans etc are all OK .
Geometric designs are a favorite along with Calligraphy of the Arabic writing.
Paintings of scenery are all OK as long as their are no animals or humans depicted.
Drawn pictures or statues of ANIMALS or HUMANS are considered to be graven images.

I bought a picture (and still have it) of the Ka'bah which I bought from an Islamic bookstore. It's absolutely gorgeous with the people doing their walk around it.

I thought it was only images of Mohammad? I suspect that if it is 'forbidden' muslims deal with it the same way christians deal with the crucifix and the forbidding of worshiping graven images.

We are allowed to draw landscapes.
I don't understand why some people say we aren't allowed to draw living things though. The Prophet's daughter had toys of animals in their house, so why not pictures of animals?
