Are doctors ever appraised? If so who carries out these appraisals?Board of physicians? Are "people skills" part of what is appraised? If not, don't you think this is immoral because doctors work on and with people, therefore, a scrutiny on how well they handle these people is very essential.

Doctors are under appraisal during much of their careers if they work for a hospital. Even if they have a private practice, they are constantly required to update their licenses to practice medicine by attending seminars and refresher courses to learn the cutting-edge procedures for various illnesses, etc. As for a doctor's bedside manner, it is unfortunately not under as much scrutiny as is their understanding of techniques, procedures, etc. However, private practice doctors can lose a lot of business if their attitude is poor, and hospital doctors have to answer to the chief of medicine if they have complaints from patients, and can be suspended if their attitudes get out of control.

They should be! Unfortunately, once they recieve their accreditation, helloooo money!

I guess there are too many physicians to go through in terms of a state to state appraisal. BUT I do believe hospitals have a review process. However, peeps with their own practice......ya I doubt it.

There is no check on bedside manner. The best thing to do, seriously is to find a md that has the type of manner you like. If you don't have that luxuary, ie you must use THIS doctor, then do so, and realize you go to him for how he can help you, and it isn't really necessary to like him. Often times MD's with poor communication skills, excentric, sarcastic, what ever they see their practices dwindle and they become their own sensor.

I'm sure the AMA has rules just like the (legal) Bar Association.

They will likely include conduct. I bet doctors are not periodically reviewed, however.
