The term is illegal aliens and it is the legal term for them, according to our government.

'Alien' is a precise term for a person from a different sovriegn state. It is theoretically a more nutral term than 'foreigner,' and non-specific so that it carries no connotations of race or nationality.

It has, of course, been confabulated with 'extraterestrial' for some time now, which is perplexing.

'Illegal Alien' is a propper term. 'Illegal Foreign National' would also be correct.

Immigrant is much less precise, since it can refer to a person moving - legally or illegally - from one locality to another, as well as from one state to another. For instance, you can immigrate to California from New Hampshire.

Here is the Houghton Mifflin Definition:

a·li·en (l-n, lyn) KEY

ADJECTIVE:

Owing political allegiance to another country or government; foreign: alien residents.
Belonging to, characteristic of, or constituting another and very different place, society, or person; strange. See Synonyms at foreign.
Dissimilar, inconsistent, or opposed, as in nature: emotions alien to her temperament.
NOUN:

An unnaturalized foreign resident of a country. Also called noncitizen .
A person from another and very different family, people, or place.

This term has been used for centuries, ie things like the Alien & Sedition Acts. It is the correct term to use, and not derrogatory in anyway. It was used in this context long before people started talking about men from Mars.

It is the legal definition of non-citizens. We have legal aliens, like permanent residents, and illegal aliens, who have no right to be here. This use of the word was from long before science fiction existed to apply it to little green men.

If they are bona fide immigrants, they are no longer aliens, as they were before the U.S. granted them citizenship.

There is such a thing as a "Resident Alien" as well.

Why do you call a "wheel" are "rim"? Now THAT is incorrect.
