Hi Midge, as you already are aware it is secular humanists who put this type of rubbish about, those who are God and law unto themselves.

Because the Bible says that it is Faith in Jesus, his death, burial and resurrection that lead us to heaven. You can get to heaven without Baptism. Baptism is the outward sign to others of your inner Faith in God. You do not need baptism to go to heaven, but rather to be in accordance with Christ's example and to receive the Holy Spirit.
Marriage is a union between 2 people as well....an outward sign to others so they may witness their promise to each other and God to be faithful one to another. God designed marriage. The actual ceremony itself has changed...back in the day a father gave his daughter to another man and they were married, in trust and with a promise that that man would take care of his daughter in a way that is pleasing to God. We have the ceremony now as a legalization of the union to recieve the government benefits of the marriage. That is what I think.

Baptism is the outward sign of your commitment to God, the same as a marriage ceremony is the outward sign to show your commitment to the other person.
Technically, I guess you don't need either of them, you know in your heart, but to show that you are serious about the commitment you are making you should share with others.
Neither of them have to be big, it could be only 1 or 2 other people!

The act of baptism itself does not save you. Baptism is symbolical of our dedication to the Lord Jesus Christ. I beleive you are directing this question to the Pentacostal and Protestant faiths so I will answer as a Pentacostal, respectfully from that point of view.
We choose to be baptised after we are saved, going through the motions of the baptism itself is a waste we believe if you have not totally committed yourself to serving the Lord Jesus Christ. I mean here you are standing in front of God and everyone confessing that you are being obedient to the Lord Jesus Christ, being Baptised because he led by example, we should follow. However Jesus was not Baptised as an infant, he choose to be baptised submmersed by John the Baptist. When John himself, proclaimed, oh Lord it is you who should be baptising me. Anyway, to the Pentascostal Christian, Baptism is a proverbial coming out of the Closet, it's telling everyone that you have choosen to serve the Lord Jesus Christ, and by doing so you are choosing to follow the Lord in Water Baptism. That's it , the realm of marriage is a different story, it is against God's law not to be married if you are going to co-habitate. Anyway, this is meant with kindness, I just wanted to explain our beliefs, as respectfully as possible. Remember if you are a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ we are on the same team. Protestant, Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist or Pentacostal. Glory be to God, for through the Lord Jesus Christ we are saved!

You do need to be baptized:
Romans 6:3-5
3 Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?
4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
Just simply believing, with no basis for that belief, is foolish. My belief is that belief based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The Bible is VERY clear: works do not save. Only faith in Christ as your Lord saves your soul.
Baptism is a public testimoney to dying to yourself and having your sins washed away, and rising with new life. It is symbolic of what already took place with you and the Holy Spirit. Being baptised is also a command by the Lord. Nevertheless, it is not baptism that saves, but the previous faith in Christ.

Actually "God" didn't say anything about baptism - I think that was either Jesus or John. And I think it's just a confirmation (a public act) to SHOW people of your private acceptance of Christ. You don't have to PROVE it to anyone, but if you want to, you can be baptized.
