If you're a novice go to a store that specializes in wine and tell them your likes and dislikes and they should be able to direct you in the right direction.

If the wine is for desert, you might want to go for a sweet white desert wine, for fish and white meats a dry white wine, for darker meats a red wine. take your dinner menu to a good wine store and discuss it with the experts/manager.

if this isn't about food and dinner, go to a wine tasting event and try as many as possible until you find the one you like.

There are plenty of good wines for under $10. it mostly depends on how much you are willing to spend.

If i'm shopping for wine, i look at the origin, the serial number, the type and the age. Most of the time i fair well, but had some bad experiences too.

The serial or batch numbers are usually on the label when a bottle is filled at the winery, and not in bottling plants. Good luck finding any serial numbers at the super market.

If you don't know a lot about wine yourself, the best thing you can do is find a good, upscale wine shop and get to know the owner. You'll get a lot of good recommendations from someone who tastes wine for a living. Going to a big, impersonal store and reading the labels on the shelves is not the way to go. A lot of good wine shop owners will put together a mixed case for you of some of their favorites, which is a good way to try interesting wines. You'll eventually start to cultivate your own tastes and have your own favorites.

you can always ask someone at the beer/wine store..tell them your price range and what you want... if they dont know anything about wine try someplace else. You can get some great wine for good prices if you know what you're doing... or, of course, you can pay big for some good stuff.

Find a good liquor store, develop a rapport with the staff, and they will help you make good choices. My favorite liquor store offers wine tasting on Tuesday evening.
