Laptop running on Windows 98 can best only load Windows XP if you have a Pentium III

Would agree that most inexpensive way is to get something new and compatible with the drivers that will be installed
Laptop is not like PC which can be easily upgraded by adding memory and sorts

Yes, you probably can move up to XP. Here is what you will need.
1. A CPU with a clock speed of at least 400 megs. faster is better.
2. At least 512 megs of ram. More is better.
3. All of the drivers for your computer. I.E. sound, video, modem/ethernet, PCI buss, etc.
4. A CD-ROM drive.
5. The disk for any and all software that you will want to run.

If you need to purchase a new cpu or ram, it might be better to purchase a "new" laptop. Today they start at about $400. You could spend pretty close to that upgrading what you have, and then it will still be pretty slow. A laptop running Win98 has got to be at least 7 years old.

what you really should do is get a new laptop

if you are running a laptop with windows 98, there is not enough of anything (memory, diskspace, etc to upgrade the laptop)

the most inexpensive no fuss way, would be to just get a new laptop
