If the wood has a pretty grain, I'd consider staining it. http://www.paintquality.com/faq/Interior/barewoodstaining.html

If not, then glossy paint. This article has more specific recommendations about the best kind of paint to use: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art45483.asp

Was it already stained or painted? If so, ask at the store where you want to buy the paint, and see what they recommend. If it was previously stained, you may have to strip it, or at least thoroughly sand it, and you may need a high-adhesion primer. If it's unfinished, you can prime first with latex primer, and then paint with latex. I'd use either an eggshell or satin-finish, though, rather than flat or gloss.

If you can take a drawer with you to the store when you go to ask, they may be better able to help you. Good Luck with your project!

I've found that paint that is made especially for cabinets is much better to use on furniture. It seems to dry much harder than other paint. Walmart has a Krylon Cabinet and Trim paint that is good. God Bless!!

Most interior woodwork looks best in an eggshell finish, as high-gloss paint can have a rather bleak, deadening effect.

if its to be painted sand lightly with a soft sandpaper like wet and dry paper.use a primer called melamine primer(this is important)normal primers and undercoats do not stick well to finished or varnished wood.after a coat of melamine primer any paint you choose will stick.eggshell will give a soft shean finish satin will give softer still and gloss will(well you know)gloss.good look.
