I have a DVD recorder that has HDMI output. If I buy a HDMI to DVI adapter can I hook up my DVD recorder to an LCD monitor and be able to use the cable TV tuner or will the HDMI output only send the DVD playback feed.

Hi. Can't figure out how to enter a "reply" on the question so I'll just respond here (yes...it is my first time using Yahoo answers ;) ).

Thanks for the replies guys. Good to hear HDMI is just another output method like coaxial etc.

To clear up the confusion there's just two devices here, a stand alone DVD recorder from Lite-on with an analog TV tuner and HDMI output, and a monitor with a DVI input.

The monitor does have built in speakers but if the audio doesn't travel through the HDMI to DVI adaptor (I'm ordering it from monoprice now that I know it'll work) I'll just use the RCA audio out on the DVD recorder to a mini-system.

Thanks again for the replies!

HDMI is just a "bus"; it does not care what goes through.
Yes, you should be able to view both DVD playback and your TV tuner input through HDMI.

I am a little confused how you have everything hooked up here. But let me take a stab.
You have two digital sources
1.DVD recorder
2.Cable TV Tuner
And one LCD TV
First off, I assume you are needing the HDMI to DVI adapter because you have a LCD TV that does not have a HDMI input. If this is not correct, and your LCD does have a HDMI input, dont worry about the connector.
Now, if the cable tv tuner has a HDMI output
and the DVD recorder has both HDMI output and HDMI input, this is what I would recc.
The only way to get the full digital source from the cable tuner to the DVD is by the HDMI cable
So , use a HDMI from the output of the Cable box, to the input of the DVD player, then take another HDMI from the output of the DVD player to the back of the TV.
If the Tv does in fact have only DVI, then use then use the adaptor, and realize this would be only video, you would then also have to run a audio cable from the DVD player to the back of the TV.
Hope this helps and let me know if yo have anymore problems or questions
