Choice #1 is the appropriate response. Why? Simple: We already know why they hate us. They hate us and want to kill us for no other reason than the fact that we are Americans. They believe that a Jihad (Holy War) has been declared, and it is therefore their sacred duty to kill all American infidels (those who do not believe in Islam) who will not convert to Islam. The Qu'run promises them rewards in Heaven from Allah if they martyr themselves and kill as many infidels as possible in the process. Notice, however, that the terrorists have not given Americans an opportunity to convert first -- they have gone straight to "Kill the American infidels!" They have no qualms about dying for their cause, especially if they take at least one American out with them. How do you reason with people like that? Let me answer that for you: YOU DON'T. They cannot be bought, they cannot be bargained with, they cannot be reasoned with, they cannot be persuaded with tears or eloquent speeches -- face it, these people want to kill Americans and NOTHING is going to change their minds because they believe there is nothing better they can do with their lives than martyr themselves for the cause. They have already decided it's us or them. I vote us. All opposed?

Hi kimmy..... before I answer let me quote Churchill.

How dreadful are the curses
which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries. Besides the fanatical frenzy, which
is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic
apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exists wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded
sensualism degrades this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities..... but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science of which it had vainly struggled the civilization of Modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.
(The River War, First Edition, Vol II, pages 248-250). Churchill is just great
isn't he. He remains a hero of the 20th century.

Even way back then they knew what a problem this religion was.

The only way to deal with a disease is to eliminate the bug that promotes it.

Dialog has been going on for centuries and its time for closure.

Option 1

I'll vote for #1

If that does not work then #1 should do the trick.

Then if the above options fail then put #1 into play

The answer to why they hate us, is because we are not moslem fundamentalists and therefore need to be put to the sword. So...given that as a response to the why do they hate us.....I'll take kill the bastards as my choice.

Defend yourself (in a collective sense). Part of that means taking it on the offensive, i.e, kill those that need to be killed.

Trying to discover why they hate us intimates that you would change your behavior if you knew why. If you do this you yield to them and you've lost.

We are not in the wrong. We are not trying to kill them. But we must defend ourselves.

Have you noticed, we haven't been attacked since we're been in Iraq (knock on wood)? If nothing else, our involvement in Iraq keeps us from fighting on our own soil. If non-combatants are unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, I'd rather they weren't Americans.

Actually I prefer lets find out the RIGHT people who committed this unspeakable act against us and then lets kill the bastards!

I'm a liberal and I choose #1.
The only solution to terrorism is to kill every last one of them, but that's something this country doesn't have the guts to do. If a terrorist blows up a market, you take him, his wife, his children, his parents, his grandparents, and all of his friends and execute every one of them. Eventually, they'll get the message.

Ultimately both. You have to understand what terrorism and terror warfare is: It is an asymmetric form of combat whose goal is specifically to heighten fear, anxiety, and awareness within a population of people.

In short, you use terror warfare to get your point across, through whatever means possible.

and you're wrong about 10 words to answer...too simplistic.

If you can kill them. you reduce the terror threat.
If you understand their motivations, then you can act to reduce their motivators.

We are currently doing both.
