Simply put yes and yes.
Female dogs have a heat cycle depending on the breed it can be every 6 months or once a year, and many do spot or bleed a little the younger the dog the more likely the spotting is to be heavier. However it is slightly different than a human period in that the dog bleeds before being fertile to prepare the womb while a human bleeds after once she is no longer fertile to flush the womb. Contrary to popular thought it is not during this bleeding that the female dog is fertile it is actually after the bleeding stops that she is ready to be bred hence why so many accidental breedings occur when people say well she was done bleeding I thought she was out of heat. A dog will stay in heat for up to one week after the bleeding stops (depending on the dog most its only a couple of days)
This is the time to be extra vigilant about keeping her away from other dogs if a pregnancy is not desired.
And as for fertility yes any animal is capable of being infertile.

Yes, they can be infertile. But don't count on it. Spay her anyway.

Female dogs do NOT have a "period". They have a heat, also known as being in estrus. Where dogs are only fertile durign the second week of this heat, which resembles a period only in that they have a show of blood, a human can't get pregnant during a period. Our estrous cycles are different.

Once again, people can avoid all the troubles of heats and fertility by spaying a dog. Not only does it reduce the niumber of dogs dying in shelters, but it eliminates pyometra, uterine, and ovarian cancer, and it reduces the chances of mammary cancer.

Yes they can be infertile. We tried to breed my dog, and she is unable to get pregnant. And, no, they dont have periods, they have heat cycles.. They are about once every 6 months, and they last about 2 weeks. They show blood and this is the only time they can get pregnant. If you are trying to breed, you put the male with her around the 9th day of her cycle. But there are already too many puppies in shelters, Spay and Neuter.

sure,a dog can be born infertile, or something can happen in the course of its life (disease, cancer, any number of things) to cause them to become infertile. as far as a period. they don't have a period like women do, they come in season about twice a year for the average dog.

Yes, dogs can be infertile, usually caused by a disease called brucellosis (one thing a pet should be tested for before breeding)

Yes, dogs do menstruate, but in some breeds, especially the small ones, you may not see the actual blood.

yes and yes (with qualification).
I had a champion male that was totally sterile. Very disappointing and costly as it ended his blood line for me.
Females have "heat" cycles when they flow.
Usually twice yearly in most domestic dogs.
The onset of the heat, before actual blood flow, usually is marked by swelling of external sexual organs.
This marks the start of the fertile time frame.
Each female is a bit different, just as humans are.

It seems that most everyone on here hates when people refer to dogs being in heat as a period. They're in heat. They are receptive to mating. Do everyone a favor and have them all spayed, then you won't have to worry about it anymore, and won't risk having more unwanted puppies come into the world.

They come into season / heat twice a year and it lasts for about 3 weeks. The dog will have discharge, like a period, but not for the entire time.

I'm sure that just like any other species, they can be infertile.

Please have her spayed and you won't need to worry about it!
