The emergency room didn't fix Aaron Evans, the 14-year-old asked his dad if he was going to die.

"No, no," David Evans remembers saying. "We didn't know. And here I am: I come home and I'm burying him."

What was bothering Aaron was an amoeba, a microscopic organism called Naegleria fowleri that attacks the body through the nasal cavity, quickly eating its way to the brain. The doctors said he probably picked it up a week before while swimming in the balmy shallows of Lake Havasu.

Such attacks are extremely rare, though some health officials have put their communities on high alert, telling people to stay away from warm, standing water.

"This is definitely something we need to track," said Michael Beach, a specialist in recreational water-born illnesses for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This could be a case of the Orkin man paying a visit to the Earth. I'm not making a joke here, this is very serious and that story sounds awful. But we as humans are like cockroaches and we use up everything the earth has to offer and now global warming has come to light and we are likely to see more and more odd things growing that may be could not grow before due to the cooler weather... If so we are not going to have medicines and cures readily available to us and this could be the Earths way of cleaning house... Just something to consider...

No, I do not agree... life is life and it has always been hard. I suggest you read up a bit, even at the start of this country there were very high rates of childhood death, and the expected life span was 39 years or so... today it is 80 something

Very sad for that family... but it's just life and death... no conspiracy to poison the water

I saw this on the news too ! How horrible for the family. We are hearing about new things every year that can kill. Where do these things come from . It's hard enough just worrying about kids getting to and from school safely .

Yes especially as the worlds population expands to greater numbers, there is also the fact that pollution of our rivers and the seas comes from industry too.

I disagree. The water isn't being poisoned. Warm, standing water is a breeding ground for microscopic organisms like amoebae. You don't need to put anything into the water for dangerous organisms to grow in it.

This seems to be increasing with global warming if I read it correctly. To circumvent the panic I know you're about to start though, micro-organisms that do nasty things to us is nothing new. Just look at malaria, yellow fever, dysentary, ebola, elephantitis, and many many many others.

That's so sad, but we are not alone in this world. That bacteria was just living its life. Don't take nature for granted.

Hi C&C. I guess this means you use to swim in Lake Havasu yourself. Still do?

Thanks again.
