Our male, 6.5 year old, neutered cat is Leukemia positive (not on meds as his most recent bloodwork - less than 2 weeks ago - showed all his calcium and potassium levels to be normal) recently starting peeing in the living room.

The day after we took him to the vet, he pee'd on our dog's bed in the living room. He waited for my wife to come back after the dog's walk and for her to sit down to do it. We thought he this might be against the dog, even though the pup has been around for over a year now. So we picked up the dog's bed but he's now peeing in the same spot even though the bed has been removed.

We have not changed litter brands (he's never been picky about that) and we keep it in a closet on the 2nd floor and it's kept clean. He's still using the box, he's just doing in the living room, as well.

Any suggestions on getting him to stop? Getting rid of him is NOT an option so don't even bring it up.

Each time we clean the area (or the bed) extensively. Putting his litter box in the spot is also not an option.

Cats are so strange sometimes with these kinds of habits! As you most likely already know, the urine smell is deeply in bedded into the carpet, and padding. (assuming it's carpet) I'm sure your not really thrilled about ripping up or replacing carpet, so I would suggest this: Clean the area the best you can. Enough so that he won't smell it from a distance. If he walks over it, he will always smell it. So every time you see him near that spot in the carpet (that area of the carpet even) scold him. After a while, he will know he is doing something bad. (think of the kitchen table, you've most likely scolded him if he jumped on the table, and now he knows not to) Don't rub his nose in it or anything, just yell at him when-ever he gets close. If you leave him inside when you go to work, may I suggest you put something rigid in that spot. Something uncomfortable for him to walk on. Good luck! NEVER NEVER NEVER PUT THE LITTER BOX IN THAT SPOT!

maybe the dog peed on the bed a little at one point or there was an odor in the dog bed which caused the cat to decide to pee in it? Or it could just be a behavioral problem.

Not sure, but i do believe there are good odor removal products at the major pet stores.. i'd try that, and also putting a litter box in that spot for a while, if nothing else.

i hope it works out. i love cats...

the trick is to change the smell of the area. He keeps peeing there because he still smells 'himself' so being a male cat, he'll re-mark his spot.

When cleaning the spot get a good pet stain remover and maybe another carpet/fabric cleaner to get rid of the sent.

Talk with a specialist at your local petstore or vet office for more info :) good luck

Your little one is continuing to urinate in the same spot due to the smell of urine being there. Use carpet deodorizer, vaccum and spray febreeze in the spot, and once he doesn't smell the urine anymore, he shouldn't urinate in the same spot.
