Two weeks ago I adopted a 2 year old terrier mix from a shelter? They thought she was in heat but my vet confirmed that she was not. Her nipples are enlarged so I am not sure if she is pregnant now or if the enlarged nipples are due to a previous pregnancy. She is scheduled to see the vet again on Monday for vaccinations. Does anyone know if the nipples remain enlarged after a dog has had puppies?

Nipples tend to remain enlarged after whelping puppies.

They also get tend to get larger and larger with each subsequent litter, especially if she was bred too soon between litters and bred too much.

Are you sure she was not spayed by the shelter prior to you adopting her? Check the paperwork ASAP and, if not, schedule a spay right away.

Why would a shelter adopt out a dog that has not been spayed?? Did the vet confirm that the dog was not pregnant at this time? Did the vet set up a spay appointment?
You DO NOT vaccinate a pregnant dog, so the vet better confirm that it is or is not pregnant.
Spay ASAP!!

Yes they do remain enlarged to some degree. Its very clear when a dog has had a litter before and same with a mare (horse). Nipples never go back to normal to those that have never had pups before or foals.

Usually their teats are larger & drooping. The more litters & they younger they had them, the more enlarged they appear. Bless you for rescueing a shelter dog.
