The smoking ban is such a load of cr ap.
What happened to freedom of choice? Non-smokers always had a choice, if you don't want to sit in a smoky bar/pub/restaurant, don't go there. Simple.
For all the people who go on about lower cancer rates, do you really think that it makes a difference after a couple of years?
Don't believe the hype.

Pubs had a year to take measures to prepare for the smoking ban. Those that did (outdoor covered area's etc) seem to be doing ok, but those that didn't (e.g., my local) are gonna go to the wall.
I actually had a drive round where I live last Friday night to see how many people were in the pubs, and those that just expect smokers to go outside next to the main road to smoke were virtually empty on their busiest night of the week.
I think you should ask this question again when the cold weather comes in. That will be the real test.

Since the ban I have become a regular at my village local. So also have about 10 other friends and neighbours from the same village. In addition there are more outsiders turning up there. Food wherever it is served is pleasant to eat without the constant smell of smoke coming from the bar or even the restaurant. The custom has increased and the owners have seen a
15% increase in takings. There will be some that close down because they refuse to move with what is now the majority of people that want to breathe clean air and not other peoples pollutant.

My brother in law is a pub landlord (Own pub) He hasn't shut down if he does complain that the smoking ban means his regulars (All smokers) And although they do visit stay less than they sued to. The other thing is that the nearest garage from his pub (Sells drinks) Is doing a lot better than before.

In my area the pubs can't cope with the amount of customers that are coming in because of the smoking ban. More families are now going to the pub for a meal because they know their kids will be out of the way of the deadly effects of other peoples smoke and the whole family won't go home stinking of stale smoke.
The drinks sales are still up as people are drinking with their meals.

It is a fact that many pubs are going out of business because of the ban in the UK.
That is not debatable,it is a fact!
sales of booze from supermarkets etc have shot up since the ban.
That is also fact!
Pubs are almost a thing of the past now.
I haven't got any figures for you, but it should be easy enough to find out, take my word it is a fact!!
The food part of a pub was usually kept apart from the drinking area, that was good I never objected to folk eating in a pub.
I think I will start , if I go into a pub I don't want to see folk eating and drinking the few soft drinks they buy.
We need areas outside for food eaters, one big trough, they can all muck in together!!
Would they still go to a pub?? I think not!!
Yes I like that idea any one want to sign my petition?
OK the sales of soft drinks would plummet, so what? The pub is not there to sell bloody fizzy pop.

I think they're doing ok overall so far as the weather has been quite mild and smokers can go outside. The real biter will start soon, when smokers won't really want to smoke in the cold, and will boycott the pubs to stay at home. This is when pubs will really start to feel the pinch.

Too early to say but in the 11 weeks since the introduction of the smoking ban in July, like-for-like sales at M&B's English pubs rose by 2.2%, with drink sales up 0.9% and food sales up 5.8%.

Personally love the smoking ban in my commercial and public sectors. Have done my share to have that ilk thrust out
into the cold and wet so their foul scent escapes my nose. To
hear them cough, hack, spewing horrid tars is disgusting. We
who can smell a rose at thirty paces can have good clothing fouled by tobacco scent just in passing downwind of noxious
weed abusers. The cheek swell of tobacco chewers has vile
promise for public footing of healthy citizens and snuff snort
only spews an ickyness quicker. Tobacco users are addicts
who over time grow astute in showing depraved indifference.
I say tax their filth and tax it yet again to help pay for related health care costs. Meanwhile, shove 'em outside.................

its because a lot of people only go out for the last hour or so .but if they put an outside smokers place with table and chairs and overhead heating and some music ,like some of the pubs and hotels and resturants in ireland, and it should improve.

I'm a smoker. My wife's a non-smoker. Even she doesn't like going to pubs now because there's no atmosphere anymore as all the fun people are standing outside leaving just the tofu-eating Guardian readers to settle down with their organic orange and carrot juice...that's when they actually bother to go to the pub.

I'm wondering when they'll actually start limiting the amount of alcohol that can be served in pubs...
