The Swiss have never had a standing army, that not to say they are defenseless. Just about every swiss citizen owns a gun and knows how to use it. In WWII not including the Germans the answer would be Britain.

Remember the German army was well equipped and well trained, they just had a lunatic for a leader. If Hitler let his generals do what generals do, the Germans would have faired much better.

I have to disagree. The English, German, or Italian have the strongest army. The only reason Hitler never dared war on the Swiss is only because they are a neutral country, but the Swiss guard are not the weakest military group on the contrite they are very deadly and protect the Vatian and the Pope.

Ariane L The Swiss Guard are not part of the Swiss Army its just the name for the Pope's Bodyguard who were originally recruited from Swiss Mercenaries hundreds of years ago.

Switzerland has a well armed and trained force their specialty is in DEFENSE as the country is not only surrounded by Mountains but Full of mountains and invasion force would have a very hard time taking ground.

But the Swiss have nothing to fear as they are banking most of the World's ill-gotten gains from virtually every crooked politician in every country on the globe, so they will never be invaded.

No, Switzerland was neutral thats why Hitler never invaded. The Swiss are very pacifistic do they have an army? Yes are they any good? Probably not they've never had a war to test it.

Either Germany or Britian would have the best standing army currently.

Actually, the Swiss army isn't so strong as it is strategically located. The whole country is ringed with mountains and their entire population is a militia... meaning any invasion of ground troops (much more important in WWII) would have meant endless mountain passes through areas filled with caves and side routes... not to mention the snow in the winter. Furthermore, the swiss were nuetral, so there was no reason to waste manpower invading a fortress like country which wasn't a threat in the first place.

The strongest army in Europe TODAY is England's.

hmmmm.

The strongest army in Europe. I wouldnt say the Swiss because they dont have the strongest army in Europe but if you include Russia in Europe I'd say Russia. But if you dont include Russia i'd say France.

The French Army. Its total strength is 779,450. Its the largest Military in Europe, a very strong nuclear power with army bases across Africa

The Swiss military is more equivelant to a National Guard unit. Citizen Soldiers. Not knocking their defensive capability but... if you are comparing militaries...

They have very little to no real-world combat experience and are relatively small.

The Brits on the other hand. Their military is a complete force capable of both offensive and defensive fighting anywhere in the world. And they have a lot of real-world combat experience.

Most of the other European countries (with the exception of the Turkish military if you want to include them since they are a NATO member now) have seen only limited combat since WWII.

For example, the Kosovo conflict was the first use of the German Lufttwaffe in an offensive capacity since WWII.

I would have to say Britain. Even though Britian hasn't got the biggest army, they are one of the world's best trained armies so this makes up for the loss in numbers. They also have the best special forces in the world as well as one of the best secret services in the world, which is all part of the military. They also have some of the worlds best technology and vehicles.
