You can tell a horse's age by looking at it's teeth - hence the phrase "Never look a gift horse in the mouth".
As a horse gets older the angle of the teeth increases and certain marks will also appear, like the Galvaynes Groove: this is a groove that appear's on the third incisor at about 10 years of age and gradually works its way down the tooth as it grows. By 20 years of age the groove has reached the bottom and by 30 years of age it has disappeared altogether.
This is a good site for learning how to age a horse by it's teeth: http://www.vivo.colostate.edu/hbooks/pathphys/digestion/pregastric/aginghorses.html

I don't believe that any horse has lived to the age of 62 years. A horse's teeth (condition and wear patterns) are a good indicator of its age.

His teeth and the atrophy of muscle tissue above the eye and beside the tail head, this would give a good idea to the age of the animal.

Is that 62 Human Years? Nup, sounds hard to believe.
Maybe it's a calculation, you know, if a human heart beats nnn times over xxx amount of years,.....49 beats per minute x 80 years = total amount of beats
then measure how fast a horse's heart beats and divide the Human total amount of beats.
Kind of like how we calculate Dog Years.

It's teeth and it's hooves. You can kind of tell a horse like a human though. If it looks old, it probably is. If it looks 1-2 it is probably young.
Hopefully that helps!
