Instead of adopting the child, invite the woman to come live with you and help her parent.

You each definitely need to hire a lawyer. The laws are different in each state and since this will be an interstate adoption you need to have lawyers from Virginia and from New York. You each need your own lawyer anyway to be sure that the adoption is legal no matter where you live. Adoption is not just about a friend letting you raise her baby. It is a legal matter that needs to be handled as such. If you adopt her baby, her legal rights to the child will be ended and you will be the legal parent of the child forever. I also think there are lots of issues involved in adopting the child of a friend. For everyone's sake (and especially the child's) you should both go to counseling and be sure you know exactly what is involved in what you are doing. It can be very difficult to give up a baby and it can be very difficult to mother a child -- under all the best circumstances and intentions. I think adoption between friends would be very difficult because you will end up taking full responsibility and your friend will have no rights whatsoever. What if you end up resenting the child because she reminds you of things that bother you about your friend? What if your friend doesn't like the way you are bringing up your child? What kind of relationship are you planning to establish between the child and your friend? And what kind of relationship are you planning to maintain with your friend? Please consider all this issues involved before you go ahead with this and get help sorting it all out from a professional. Good luck!

get you an lawyer and get a home study done. I am not sure if the lawyer will need to be in New York or Virgina. I adopted a baby from out of state and the adoption had to be in the state the child was born. Good luck and God Bless

Contact a lawyer that handles private adoptions. It will cost some money, but you need to do it for everyone's sake. Good luck!
