No one knows 100% what causes depression, but most people belive in the monoamine theory. That means that [what causes depression] is low levels of certain neurotransmitters [messenger chemicals that carry signals from nerve cells] in the brain. They call it the monoamine theory of depression because monoamines are the group of chemicals that the neurotransmitters belong to.

There are also people who believe that depression is caused by biological, genetic, and/or environmental causes, which can also be true.

Biological changes occur because of a fluctuation in hormone levels in the brain. Depression can also develop due to a physical illness, a reaction to a medication that you are taking, or as an outcome of substance abuse. Whenever the illness subsides or you get treatment for the abuse, the depression will go away.

Genetics play a big part, too. If both parents of a child have depression, the child is likely to become depressed. Also, with identical twins, if one suffers from depression, the other is 70% likely to be diagnosed with depression.

Environmental situations, like being really stressed out or breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend can contribute to depression, especially in very vulerable people.

There are so many things that can cause depression. It can be chemical and it can be what is going on. I am battling depression from situations. I am 29 and married a girl who cheated on me, divorced and then married a wonderful girl and she passed away a year later of brain cancer. It is pretty easy to give up on my dream of having a family.

Therefore mine is situational and I refuse to take medication for it. I have resorted to therapy with a great doc who is not itching to throw pills in me and I am doing better every day.

Only you and a good doc can determine what is causing depression but it is a serious thing and can hit anyone. It could be something that is or has happened to a person or it could be chemical or it could be something else. Talk to a doc if you think you are depressed.

Take care of yourself!!!

Depression results from disturbances in the areas of the brain that regulate mood. During manic periods, a person with bipolar disorder may be overly impulsive and energetic, with an exaggerated sense of self. The depressed phase brings overwhelming feelings of anxiety, low self-worth, and suicidal thoughts

Depression may be triggered by stressful life events, other illnesses, certain drugs or medications, or inherited traits. Although causes of depression are not entirely understood, we know it is linked to an imbalance in brain chemistry. Once the imbalance is corrected, symptoms of depression generally improve.

You should look up the conditions that meet "clinical" depression and if you meet the criterion, then, see your doctor. Depression is or can be a serious illness.

Primarily two main fronts from which it comes: endogenous and exogenous; endogenous means that which comes from within and exogenous comes from without. Its important to know from where your depression comes.

If it comes from without (exogenous), that is--from your environment--good--you only need find what it is and do something about it. You might need help with this. If it comes from within(Endogenous) that's going to be harder to deal with and you will need professional help. This would be trauma or event that you are NOT conscious of.

Hope I didn't over do it---you might just be sad and, of course, this is normal.

Good luck

Many things- sudden changes in environment or circumstances, a drastic event, unexpressed emotions, anger turned inwards. Sometimes it is even caused by chemicals in the brain that the person has no control over.
