The Lord's discipline is a response of His love for us His desire for each of us to be holy. Consider Hebrews 12:5-7 (NLT), "And have you entirely forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you, his children? He said, 'My child, don't ignore it when the Lord disciplines you, and don't be discouraged when he corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes those he accepts as his children.'

There are a number of Bible passages which teach that God disciplines His own children.

Deuteronomy 8:5 "As a man disciplines his son, so ... God disciplines you."

Proverbs 3:11-12"The Lord disciplines those he loves."

See also Hebrews 12:5-8.

This question seems to me to ask why the good or Godly suffer. While I am not a Christian, I think that this is one of the foundational questions of all religions throughout history.

I believe that we live in Samsara. This is a world that is flawed in that all sentient beings suffer. The cause of this suffering is our ignorance of the true nature of each and every living being. The way out is through the cessation of suffering by understanding the illusory nature of our thoughts and emotions. Our lives, our loved ones and all we posses will change and vanish. Thoughts, emotions, possesions and people are all impermanent. Following the path of virtue, discipline and compassion will give us the ability to achieve an enlightened state of detachment from these impermanent things and the real love that is actually our true nature. If that were to happen to all people, then we would truly live in a Pure Land. This land is one of wisdom where all beings have no sense of a seperate self. This lack of ego reveals our interconnectedness(?) and unveils who WE really are.

So, no, I don't believe that God disciplines his people.

You do know that the root of the word discipline means "to teach" right? So I would say he disciplines in order to make people wise.

If you're going for an anti-christian viewpoint here though, let me ask you a question. Why do loving parents discipline their children?

Strengthen us and draw us near to Him.
To mature us spiritually in Him.
Keep us on the right path with Him.
Most of all because HE LOVES US! He wants to build us up- and mold us into HIS workmanship. To keep us grounded and rooted in His word, in His love. He does not want to see His children turn away! That is why He gives us His Holy Spirit- to convict us when we are wrong. And His discipline to keep us on that narrow path with Him ( as Matthew 7 explains)
Proverbs 3:12
because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Psalm 94:12
Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law;

Just like we discipline our own kids because we love them too much to see them grow up and go the wrong way or do what is wrong in God's eyes---

God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. So rejoice in Gods discipline because it means that He loves you

Before finishing the sentence I would have to have some definitions of terms.

"God," and "disciplines" will do for a start.

I can't finish it because God doesn't discipline people. There are natural consequences in place for everything we choose to do by our own free will. God lets us know ahead of time what those consequences are or may be. So the choice is ours.

Enlighten them as people need hard times to make them grow. I'm following that example by not having my kids get vaccines and bringing samples of diseases home. I also burn down the house and hope they escape. I figure this is good parenting because it's similar to what Job and others went through.
