Speaking in tongues is a phenomenon that occurs through the power of the Holy Spirit of God.
It is one of the gifts of the Spirit that the Lord has given to His children.
There is no set language, think of it like this: each person has his own special prayer language. When he speaks in tongues, this is what he uses.
Only some people can understand tongues, but many have prayer languages. Those with the gift of interpretation of tongues are, in my experience, pretty rare, but they most certainly are out there.
Almost everyone in my church has a prayer language and is encouraged to exercise it regularly.
It's all about faith in the Spirit.

Speaking in tongues is not a language that can be taught. Read Acts 2. Speaking in tongues is a gift from God. This is when you allow the Spirit of God to fill you. Your spirit begins to speak to the Spirit of God in a language unknown to man as well as Satan. This is how your spirit speaks to the Holy Spirit without Satan knowing what is being said. This is a conversation understood only by the spirit of the person speaking in tongues, the Holy Spirit (God), and whatever person is given the gift of translation. There will always be someone present that God has given the gift to translate what was said in the spirit.
To answer your other questions, yes. There are people in my church family that speak in tongues, including me. Yes, I've heard it translated and I also have the gift of translation.

I speak in tongues when I'm praying and I don't know what to pray. It's a gift from the Lord and when you are praying in the Spirit only He knows what you are praying for--it's a like a special language between you and the Lord. Some people give prophecies in tongues and others interpret it through the power of the Holy Spirit. Read 1 Corinthians and maybe that will help you a little bit.

According to the Word of God speaking in another tongue is a Spiritual gift given by the Holy Spirit...This other tongue is considered another language that the individual speaking doesn't know or hasn't learned. When speaking in another tongue and "directing towards" the congregation or an individual there must be an interpretation(not neccessarily from the individual that spoke in tongues, but may be from another person whom the Holy Spirit has given them the understanding of what was said) of what has been said (which is also 1 of the 9 spiritual gifts). Speaking in another tongue and interpretation of those tongues are equal to prophecy. These gifts are used to edify the Body of Christ and are only given by the Holy Spirit as He wills.
Also, you can pray in tongues (which your spirit ...This is not the same as speaking in another tongue (which scriptures states there must be an interpretation). But when you pray in tongues you are speaking to God and not man, and it edifies yourself. The scripture states that when you pray in tongues you speak mysteries which only God can understand. (1 Cor 14:2)
But in all, everything must be done in decency and in order according to the word of God so that their won't be confusion named among the Church. Exercise your Faith in the Spirit.

It is called speaking in tongues and refers to members of the group supposedly talking in a language known only to God and if one member does this another is needed with the gift of interpreting what has been spoken.
It is a falsehood and very dangerous, many so called prophecies have been given via this medium that have caused great harm and upset amomg Christians, it is very prevalent in the Charismatic movement.
The true gift of tongues was demonstrated by the Apostles and Peter when on Pentecost Sunday He addressed the crowd and each person heard his speech in their own language.

The movie "Elmer Gantry" illustrates it. People get so worked up by a fire-breathing preacher that they go into a kind of convulsion. In Elmer Gantry a guy starts howling like a dog! Of course its gibberish, but because it happens during the sermon like it does, they faithful say the person is speaking an "unknown language"!

Read 1st Cointhians 13 and 14... that will teach you about speaking in tongues.
I have heard people speak in tongues... I have not heard my pastor speak in tongue. It only requires a translator when it is done in front of a large group of people.

speaking in tongues has transformed from an original meaning of speaking everyones language, to a sort of convulsion or compulsion to act like a 3 yr old and stick your tongue out at everyone....
not that all isn't nonsense anyway....

to answer your question
Has anybody in your church who does that? "yes"
Do you understand them? "At the moment it is spoken, no"
Do you understand them? Let me Give you the Bible verse for that ;
1Cr 14:2 For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Has anybody translating to you?
Let me give you another Bible verse for that:
1Cr 14:27 If any man speak in an [unknown] tongue, [let it be] by two, or at the most [by] three, and [that] by course; and let one interpret.
1Cr 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
