It doesn't always boil down to "best breed" but rather best temperament, which is individual.

Why not make a day of dog-hunting?
Grab the kids up and go to your closest shelter. That way, you and your kids can interact with the dogs, see which ones fit your family best.

G'luck!

Really what it boils down to is temperament. Many breeds can be wonderful with children but even within a breed dubbed wonderful with kids you will come across that ONE exception to the breed. So do some research this site www.dogbreedinfo.com has a list of every breed you can think of their good traits and not so good ones as well as their requirements as far as caring for that breed of dog. Once you have chosen a "breed" or two start looking around for the dog with the right TEMPERAMENT within that desired breed. Most people prefer to raise a puppy however don't exclude a rescue, shelter or foster dog as they have some outstanding dogs. If you get a larger breed pup something to consider is that is will physically grow quickly but mentally will still be a pup and if you have small children this over sized pup can accidentally injure your child being unaware of their size and strength. (most common is knocking down a small child in their excitement.) Take your time do not make a rash decision make sure the dog is going to be a good fit for your family before you bring him/her home.

Best of luck to you.

There's not just one breed of dog good with children- there's loads. If you have dog experience and are a good pack leader, rottweilers and the like are perfectly good friends for children.
You have to understand though that a dog, no matter what it's breed should be expected to tolerate having its nose twisted, it's fur pulled etc. Any dog will get annoyed. I'm sure you know that anyway, but I suppose an ideal dog for children would be friendly, obedient, playful and gentle.... But not hyper or aggressive. So....labradors, and golden retrievers are always popular. I would avoid hounds, guarding dogs, terriers and possibly herders.
I would go for dogs from the gundog group, or the toy group. Gundogs are quite easily trained, gentle and biddable with no so much guarding instinct, and were bred to have a 'soft' mouth. Toys are small, and some are quite sweet characters- but be careful, some aren't suitable- for example the chihuahua- They can get barky, protective and snappy.
I would reccommend: Retrievers, pug, italian greyhound, ex- racing greyhound, king charles spaniel. There's probably loads more good ones, but these are all I can think of.

Any dog can be good with children, you really need to narrow it down by your lifestyle and what you want from the dog. For example, if you travel alot, you might not want a really big dog due to boarding issues, if you are sedentary by nature, you probably don't want a high energy dog that needs to get a lot of exercise, if your children are very young toy breeds can be too fragile, if you are a clean freak you don't want a heavy shedder or drooler, etc. Best bet is to sit down and make a list of the traits you are looking for and the things you want to avoid, then find a breed that fits.

To be honest, most dogs will be fine with kids as long as you have the kids first and the pup is socialised properly and learns that it is the lowest member of the pack. As a general rule, they say the larger the dog, the more placid it is. Terriers and toy dogs tend to be more feisty and prone to snappiness, but I know a a lot of people who have bull terriers and staffies that are brilliant with kids.
Labs and golden retrievers have a great rep with kids, but be careful where you get one from because some come from dodgy breeders.
Most hound/spaniel type dogs are pretty friendly too, such as beagles, cockers, springers.
I have a 2 year old dalmatian who has been brought up with kids and loves them to pieces. In fact, he prefers meeting new kids to new adults!

It all depends on your lifestyle and family dynamics. Are you home alot and able to care for an animal that needs alot of attention, or are you just looking for a dog that is low maintenence? For my family, we decided on a Labrador Retriever. I'm a stay-at-home-mom, so I cna be with my dog all the time. We have two kids who are 12 and 13, adn they're typical boys. They love to play football, and it works for the dog because she's full of energy. I wouldn't suggest getting one though if you live in an appartment with no yard and you're at work most of the day.

The AKC website should be able to help you narrow it down to the type of dog you should get. I think that they have a link where you answer some questions, and it suggests a breed for you.

Good luck!!

To my mind a German Shepherd is the best breed of dog that there is, but its not the breed of dog that is the problem, it the people who have them and how they look after them, most dogs will be good around children if they are look after, how they should be look after

No simple answer dogs are dogs you can get mean small dogs and placid large dogs each dog is an individual like people a result of breeding and experiences.
you will have to take stock of your circumstances read a lot talk to sensible breeders/owners choose a dog with temperament in mind and treat it sensibly good luck.
dogs tend to get stereotyped labradors friendly rotties, shepherds nasty...... not so one of the nastiest dogs I have ever encountered was a lab and goldies apparently are the breed most likely to bite their vet what I am trying to say Iguess is dogs dont deserve a reputation good or bad on the strength of any individuals behaviour.
only one dog for me by the way G.S.D. but I am biased.

A dog who has been raised to respect its family and know its place. The breed has nothing to do with it if the dog has been handled properly.Any dog can be dangerous to kids if not properly introduced,or socialized,or supervised,or any number of elements.
I think telling someone get "this" breed and it will be great with your kids is a dangerous thing to do without telling the person that ANY dog has to be brought up in the correct manner to be with kids.

Depending what sort of lifestyle you lead! I lead a very active lifestyle and I'm lucky enough to take my dogs to work everyday with me! I personally would go for a retriever either Labrador or golden they have superb temperaments my two year old niece clambers all over mine they are very patient with her you just have to watch them with food ( in child's hands ) I'm not saying they will bite, if the dog thinks you are not watching, a young child with food in their hands is Easy pickings for a tasty snack . My sisters dog has put loads of weight on since they had a child! Good luck whatever breed you choose.

I'd say maybe a Labrador because they are so friendly, however they get lazy and fat quite quickly.
Golden retrievers are great fun and very happy, loving dogs but the vet bills can be steep.
You could get a mongrel, which is a dog which is a mix of two breeds and tend to be more hard wearing than pedigree dogs and cheaper with the vet bills and insurance.
They tend to be more friendly too!
xx<3 good luck
