I have a fat old bible that is really heavy and that I use as a doorstop when it's windy. Would I be able to say that the Bible is my rock?

They mean that their faith is the firm foundation upon which the rest of their lives are built. The Bible can be your rock if you have access to authoritative interpretation. But if you are going on your own personal interpretations or those of your pastor, then those interpretations of the Bible, not the Bible itself, are your rock. And that can make for a very shaky foundation.

News flash: We ALL begin with a pre-supposition and
we all have a rock, a foundation - the Athiests to nature
only and the religious to a spiritual foundation to life.
That is mainly why the argument goes on and on and
on and on... Politically, there needs to be a decent
compromise between the two - not to say "God is dead"
or that God can only be a private matter - that is not a
decent compromise!

The rock is a metaphor for something solid and unwavering.

Like the Chevy's Like a Rock campaign, but with more meaning.

When we say that God is my rock I am referring to my foundation that my life is built upon. If you were to build a house on sand, over time it would begin to sink and you would have a very unstable foundation that will not stand when the storms begin to come. If you were to build your house on a solid rock, it will never sink. The house is built on such a solid and stable foundation that it will not be greatly effected by the storms. This too is true in our lives. Our earthly bodies are the metaphoric houses that we dwell in. If we build our lives on a solid rock, no matter what storms in life may come our way, we will continue to stand. On the other hand, those who choose to build their lives on that sand better beware when those storms begin to rage.

Religion and Faith is the rock that holds us steady when non-believers do everything in their power to convince us that they have "proof" that God doesn't exist. Just my personal opinion and I don't care who "thumbs down" me on this one, but you need to pick up that "fat old Bible" and start reading it.

No-, if religion was rock, that would mean you spent 50 bucks on it, and it only took about 10 minutes to read/use up and leave you wanting more. :D

a rock is solid hard to break so when a person says that faith is their rock no one can break that bond or take that away from them

If they tie it around their neck and jump in a lake they will drown.

Whereas atheists will swim to shore.

There is a metaphor.
