If you are watching the movies on your TV you could turn on the Closed Captioning (CC) option. When you are able to read the words and hear what they are saying it helps you a lot with the pronunciation part. Also, it helps associate what is going on on the images with what they are saying. Hope it helps :)

I sometimes watch english movies that I'm very familiar with (like disney movies, independence day, etc.) and watch them with the foreign language audio, foreign language subtitles, or both turned on.
Since it's a movie you've watched a hundred times, you already have a good understanding of what's being said in English while you're reading and hearing the translation. ("The Corpse Bride" is pretty good in french...the songs sound better!)

However, if you haven't taken at least a semester or two of foreign language classes (whichever language you're trying to learn) then all the verb tenses and conjugations will just confuse you. Movies are good for vocabulary, but unfortunately you've got to learn verb conjugations the old fashioned way: lots of practice : )

I think you need to have a base in that language to benefit from watching movies in it, because actors speak fast, they can use slang... I'm Spanish and i've been watching some movies with English subtitles. I think watching films can help to learn to pronounce a language (you can have the subtitles in that language and see how words are pronounced) and also you can learn new vocabulary.

When I moved to California ( 9 years ago ) my English was soooo bad !
I watched movies, movies, movies...and movies . At first, I read the subtitles in English of course and after many many movies I didn't need it anymore.

Yes it is very useful ! Listening to the radio helped me a lot !
The more you listen to the language you want to learn, the more your ear gets used to it and after a while ...you're OK !
Of course when I speak, I still have my French accent( not really strong )..but people say it's so sexy ! so..I'll keep it !

I have never heard this, you watch a movie because you like it, if you understand the language you don't put on the subtitles, most foreign movies have subtitles. If you want to learn a new language you go to a night school or day classes of the language you wish to learn, there are private tutors as well that you can take lessons from.

i am learning Spanish and i do watch DVDs with the language set to Spanish. at first i used subtitles but my friend (who's fluent in Spanish) told me to turn them off. i can understand more now in the past week than in the last 6 months combined. i use books to learn the words and rules but watching and listening gives the actual understanding. i also found that watching univision or telemundo show actually help the most. commercials, kids shows, news, talk shows etc, give such a variety.

Not much. You have the study words and phrases and pronunciation. The best way to do that is using the language everyday. Books or computer programs work much better. You can't take your television with you everywhere.

You can get familiar with how the words are supposed to sound. You will also see how the words are supposed to be used in sentences. If you can hear the language, you will get accustomed to it.

Actually, I think commercials and children's shows are the best ways. There are more visualizations there. They show the things they are talking about.
