I'm going to agree with the other answers.
I have Vista, and i don't recommend you try it unless you meet the recommended requirements for it (no offence, of course). 1GB minimum of ram, there not kidding.
These are the issues with vista:
There are some issue's with older programs (i imagine pre-xp/early xp era), but most run perfectly fine. I personally haven't had any problems, but then i did build my pc for vista (DX10 gaming) :p
It's kind of hard to find drivers for some things, or they don't work at all. For example: Creative X-Fi doesn't work with vista, because vista doesn't support direct sound. There is Creative X-Fi for vista, but it's more like an emulation.
If you get vista, go for premium/business/ultimate, otherwise it (basic) looks a lot like Xp with a face lift, but then you could just keep running Xp and get windows blinds.
Just the facts, but don't be discouraged, i looks sweet if anything and there are some uses for the gadget bar.

Problems with Vista? Both yes and no. Prior to buying vista you need to go to their webpage and download the software that checks your machine to ensure it can use vista as well as if all your hardware is vista compatible and drivers are available. Often you must add motherboard memory and potentially a new video card.
Vista also has some irritating aspects to it. It continuously asks you if you are sure you want to do anything. It asks you if the source of the software is trusted and such.
My personal opinion is if you are currently using XP and are happy with it.... I would wait to change until Vista comes out with their first major upgrade, like an SP1 file.
It works and is fairly fast if your machine is compatible but I find it to be a pain to work.
Good luck,
Z

I work for an IT Reseller... problems I've seen with Vista, it has a huge requirement for RAM as compared to XP. Basically does the exact same thing as XP. If you were wanting Vista, I'd run at least 2gb of memory, with a decent graphics card to boot..

It depends - after 10 months it works ok in general but there are some compatibility issues with older hardware.
Most Linksys printservers will not work with it- Linksys refuses to make Vista drivers for older ones but newer models should work.
Nvidia SLI (2 graphics cards working together) does not work right under Vista.
Most software that works under XP will work, but some may need a patch.
It is a memory hog as someone said - i recomend you have 2 gigs ram minimum for best results.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy it yet. First, you have to make sure that you have a very good computer to even run Vista. It does still have some bugs in it...I would wait at least until Service Pack 1 comes out and see how that goes.

once you're seeking to enhance your present day homestead windows XP installation, except you have a sparkling pc that merely neglected the curve, you're maximum possibly greater effective off sticking to XP for a on the same time as. on the same time as homestead windows Vista has its upsides, there are some subjects that have yet to be labored out, by using fact that is new. Drivers to help your hardware are actually not one hundred% yet. there are a number of application incompatibilities (final I heard, iTunes nevertheless wasn't working like it would). once you're a real daredevil, go forward and attempt it, possibilities are high you would be ok. although once you're a heavy gamer it is advisable to be weary as overall performance with video games may well be 10%+ slower.

I have both xp and vista and I would take the xp anyday. I can't download quite a few programs and having problems loading my printer on the puter still can't figure that out. I change all of the ness. things to download it and it won't take. I can't download a game on the internet or through the dvd that I went and bought just to play it. So if I were you I would wait till they get all the bugs out.
