Well, maybe if you read the Book of Mormon and prayed about it, you'd know the difference.

An angel came to Joseph smith with a sword, I am assuming Joseph smith tested this angel with the test that all LDS know how to test angels with and then Warren Jeff's claims that God spoke to Him, there is no "God" test known from Joseph Smith, so...there you have it folks, even if I am an ex-mormon, Warren Jeffs is wrong. Or as you can say that the mormons know that God believes in obeying the laws of the land...I am not sure why LDS people ahve never used this arguement before... Romans 13:1 [ Submission to the Authorities ] Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. This is a good example as to why the LDS church changed their claim on polygamy, submission to governing authority, because God out them their.

.ok. first off, a little clarification.....
Jeffs is the leader of a polygamist group that has members in the Intermountain West of the US and in western Canada. Jeffs is not now, and never has been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). Neither does he have any connection or association, official or unofficial, with the Church. Jeffs and his followers are in violation of the civil law. They know they are in violation of the law. They are subject to its penalties.
If any of the LDS members are found to be practicing plural marriage, they are excommunicated, the most serious penalty the Church can impose. They are in direct violation of the civil law, they are in violation of the law of this Church. The LDS article of our faith is binding upon us - “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law”.
LDS believe that more than a century ago God revealed unto His prophet Wilford Woodruff that the practice of plural marriage should be discontinued, which means that it is against the law of God. Even in countries where civil or religious law allows polygamy, the Church teaches that marriage must be monogamous and does not accept into its membership those practicing plural marriage.
That being said - Joseph Smith did some things I personally do not agree with. So did some of the prophets from the Bible. Different times - different practices. There is also written accounts of Joseph's chastisement from God as He worked with him to restore His church. Man is fallible and capable of mistakes. The church itself has corrected the situation with poygamy as afore mentioned. However, without polygamy at that time, there is a chance the church and more specifically it's members would not have survived. It was a hard place for mormons at that time, and many men were lost - leaving women without anyone to care for them.....Now while a woman today can care for herself and her own quite well alone, it was a little different then. They needed some help. Of Joseph's many "wives", most of them were sealed to him only. He did not live with all, or even most of them in this life. Some will say the mormons were forced into changing their mind over polygamy. I believe it is the nature of man not to ask God what might be right or wrong until there is pressure to make a decision put on. I believe this may have been the case with polygamy - so while the timing may seem off.....it really isn't.

God revealed to the Mormon church 100 years ago that He did not want them practicing polygamy, even though He did not take it off the books. According to modern Mormonism, a living prophet is better than a dead prophet, so Warren Jeffs sins by obeying a dead prophet rather than the current living prophet and president of the Mormon church. Joseph Smith - and Warren Jeffs - can have his multiple wives in heaven, or any planet other than the planet Earth.

Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. By his fruits ye shall know him. Read the Book of Mormon and pray about it. If it's true, then he was a real prophet of God. If not, then yeah, there's no difference between him and that crackpot Warren Jeffs as pertaining to the fact that they both practiced polygamy. Though Jeffs' version of polygamy is highly abusive and illegal. Even were one of them NOT a prophet of God, they are not really comparable. Joseph Smith did so much good in this world. He has a fame and a name that cannot be slain. In fifty years, nobody will know who Warren Jeffs was. In fifty years, the entire world will know who Joseph Smith was. *That's* the difference.
I've read the Book of Mormon. I've prayed hard about it. And I've received undeniable answers to my prayers that it is true and that Joseph Smith was a true prophet of God.
(Are you also going to compare all of the Old Testament prophets to Warren Jeffs, since they all practiced polygamy too? See how shaky that logic is? Polygamy is a biblical teaching, and has been allowed by God at certain times, including the early days of the LDS church when the men were imprisoned and killed, and the women and children were raped and driven out into the wilderness. I would think *that* crime against the LDS people would be of more concern to most "christians"...)

I don't think any of Joseph Smith's wives were married to underage girls.

your assertions about multiple wives is to say the least flawed.
However let me not get distracted -- the differences between the 2 are great, but the most significant difference is priesthood authority. Joseph Smith was a prophet called by God and Jeffs is not.

Joseph Smith did marry a 16 year old and quite possibly another teen wife. But that's all we know. We don't know how many wives he had, but some were sealed to him AFTER he died.
Jeffs marries for more prurient reasons. He is obsessed with polygamy, getting as many wives as possible, without working to support them (welfare). He CLAIMS o be a prophet, but he's no more a prophet than I am.

God did not reveal to the Mormons that polygamy was wrong, the US ARMY did. Read your history.
There is not a whole lot of difference between Smith and Jeffs........or Young for that matter when it comes to plural wives.
