I just wondered because my best friend's girlfriend told her that an owl attacked her cat, ( not a kitten) and flew away with it in its talons. I believe that's the way they carry their prey., but I've never heard of an owl attacking a cat! By the way I live in California, just in case you wondered & I don't know what type of Owl it was, wheather that is important or not.

A cat is about the size of a rabbit and may be a little heavier. An owl coming down at that speed could grab the cat since the cat couldn't see it from the air. The cat probably didn't know what hit and it doesn't matter if you didn't know what type of owl it was.

Not unusual. A large owl can carry off a full grown rabbit which can weigh 20+ pounds (easier to carry if it's dead so they usually break the victim's neck). An average female cat weighs maybe 9-10 pounds; an average male cat weighs 12-14. Another reason to keep your kitties indoors. The owls in Harry Potter carry broomsticks.

Yep! It happened to my cat. It was about 5 a.m. & I heard this loud screach in my garage. When I opened the door something flew by & scared the crap out of me, next thing my cat came running out faster than a doped up race horse. I immediately checked out my kitty & he had a hole in his paw & back. I took him to the vet & a few days later he had an abcess on his face. Apparently he had tangled with the owl. The owl lived in my garage for about 2 yrs. & not one of my cats attempted to ever go in there. Owls are predators & will go after anything they deem edible. While a vet tech I treated 2 additional cats for wounds caused by owls. So it can happen. I never heard of one being carried off, but I suppose it is possible.

she did not make it up. I have a friend that is a falconer, he told me that owls do this more often than people think but that since it happens at night, no one ever notices. Yes, to owls.. cats look like long tailed rabbits..one of their fave foods.
We have a lot of owls around here but I keep my cats indoors so I am not worried about it.

Well, if it's type of prey is scarce or gone in the area, it's probably possible the Owl had to make due with a new source of food, her cat. It's not uncommon for this to happen.

Hmm... Some owls are huge!! Are you sure it was an owl.. I am sure it's possible.. maybe if the cat was in a field or something at the time, and is quite small the owl could have mistaken it for something else..!

Yes, owls and other large predatory birds will sometimes attack cats. They regularly feed on rabbits and an adult rabbit is roughly the same size as a cat. They probably seem the same to the bird.

I've seen a owl attack a human to get to some fish in a pond.

they do this with rabbits and other small mammals, if the cat was the size of its normal prey, then yes it probably would carry away a cat.
