The verse, from the New Testament, reads ``If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.''

No. The writers of the letters and books of the Bible, use literary devices as Jesus did here. This is an example of hyberpole. I think Jesus was just trying to make people understand how serious and grave it is to stay in sin by saying that you must do all you have to do to resist sin and not let it control you. Jesus didn't instruct his followers to hurt themselves or others to resist sin, but used parables, literary devices and other things to explain his message just as any speaker today will use illustrations and the like. Hope that makes sense.
