My husband brought our cat home from the vet with two out of the 5 kittens that she was carrying still alive. They gave her a c-section and spayed her at the same time. The vet said the kittens should be fine nursing on their mother but I have read that once a cat gets spayed she can't nurse. She seems pretty full still but I wanted to know signs to look for in the kittens just in case she stops producing or isn't producing enough. She does let them suckle but gets uncomfortable after just a few minutes and leaves their nest with the babies crying. How can I tell if they are getting enough milk?
P.S. Before everyone tells me how she should have been spayed, we found her already preggers on her first trip to the vet and I did not want to abort her babies.

Its only 2 she should be able to handle it but DO keep an eye on the incision. I would suggest setting specific nursing times for her and kitten and after feeding put a little neosporin on the incision.

I would also go ahead and get supplement for them. The long nipple I have the best luck with.

I hope all goes well!!!

Cats with false pregnancy can produce milk, as can a female cat who starts mothering a litter of kittens that aren't hers, so it's possible. But as to enough milk? I think I'd ask the vet on that.

I would think that milk production would drop without a steady stream of hormones from her gonads.

However, you can imagine keeping her going with injections until the kittens are weened.
