The Fuji Nevada is kind of an entry level mountain bikes. It has decent, servicable components and should last you a number of years. If you get into racing or long rides, though, you are probably going to want to upgrade.

Being quite tall, you are going to want to be real sure whatever bike you get fits you well. Being on an undersized bike, even if doing a short commute, is not good. At one point in time, the Nevada came in a supersize 24" frame. I don't know if this is what you need, but I can't recommend strongly enough you make sure whatever bike you get fits you well.

Furthermore, you might want to be sure you can add fenders to this bike. Fenders will help keep you clean when riding in inclement weather or on muddy sections of trail.

Hope this helps.

I've commuted to work on a bike for years. 5km is a very short ride. you will barly get warmed up. So given that, shoot for a bike that will kick butt on the trails.

forget the wussy xbike.

sure the big knobbies take some extra effort to turn on the pavement - put some extra air in them and consider the extra resistance extra training since your commute is so short!

If you like a MTB you sure can do that. I've mentioned this before, but putting road style tires on it will make it much better for road. 1.5" higher pressure tires work well for general riding. Knobbies are a bite when not needed.

Don't forget to fit mudguards. It's not pretty turning up to work with wet streaks up your back!
