I can only think of one reason. For ex. to maintain a lower military presence. What other reasons do private security firms do the jobs that the military can do? If the military is not trained to perform security detail and private security firms provide better protection for US personnel than i am all for it...

I am a contractor working for Dyn Corp.
The reason there are so many private security contractors out there is to free the military personnel from this line of duty so they could go do something more important. Instead of using Navy seals, Marine recon, and army SF to protect these "important personnel", the government can use ex-military who has that kind of training and experiences. Now Recon and seals can go locate, cose with and destroy the enemy by fire and manuever. Besides the government saves more money on the long run because they don't get any military benefits. even though Blackwater PSDs makes about $500 to $1500 a day.

Places like Blackwater are hired to protect politicians and others that are in zones that require protection.

Most of those that are hired by Blackwater have military background. You should check out their site and do some research on them. You might find it interesting.

they hire private security because the military is stretched to thin...alot of private security companies guard civilian companies which is not the us military responsibility our troops are not providing guard details for companies that want to cash in on the rebuilding of iraq and they shouldn't have to..they have other more important issues to deal with...they also guard diplomatic visitors(ie senators that want to visit iraq)...instead of yanking some soldiers from checking for terrorist to guard a senator the private companies can do that...

Well the military would cost the govt more to make them do silly jobs as these. They are needed to other things. The main point other than that; how could you make money and kickbacks without going to private companies.... voila

I have and I know some bikers that went over there as "private contractors" My killing days are over I have no desire to kill or Maim anyone. I don't care what it pays or that you are above the law. I just don't want to do the things that hurt your soul. As a liberal I would rather feed people KFC until they were too full to move. Than drop a bomb on them. Go Team Red Go

It is not the role or responsibility of the military to provide private security details. The role is national security.

Not enough personnel is what we are told. But we have 2 million active per Gates and that means we have more. Yet we enroll young recruits for money and so forth. I am not sure why ? Blackwater may also get away with more than US military rules stipulate. Good question. Thanks. PS. We need more for new border patrols between Iraq & Iran also (ABC News).

State Dept has hired secuity firms in the past to maintain a low presence -- most of the firms hire ex military -- hard to get the military to release individuals to the State Dept -- against State Dept policy to have military on its payroll -- they want to be independent when dealin with the scum they have to talk to
