My understanding is that the firefighters have eachothers backs in every situation. They also, eat, sleep, etc., as much if not more so, than they do at home. It is the same way in most branches of law enforcement. When you have someone's back it means you are trusted fully and you trust fully.

Aside from sometimes spending more time with their brother firefighters than their families, the stressful and traumatic events they deal with on a regular basis forms a strong bond between persons. It is almost like a therapy group. You have all of these guys that went through the same experiences and they all can identify and empathize with each other on a very deep level.

My dad was a NYC fireman. I can tell you that it's a very tightly-knit group. Even more tight than police & doctors. They come together as brothers no matter what part of the country they're from. Whenever my dad traveled, the first place he visited was the local fire station. They always welcomed him with open arms & often even invited us to their home for dinner & to meet their family. It's an amazing brotherhood.

Fireman do things other than fight fires. They get cats off trees, help people who have flooded basement, often run emergency medical services and are in charge of many rescue operations.

FIRE FIGHTERS HAVE ALWAYS LIVED AT THE FIRE HOUSE FOR A SHIFT OF THREE DAYS ON DUTY (24X3 AND THREE OFF OR SUCH DEPENDING ON THE FIRE HOUSE) THEY COOK WATCH TV, DO THE WASHING AND MAINTENANCE OF THE FIRE HOUSE AND ARE ON CALL / STANDBY AT THE FIRE HOUSE-SO LOGICALLY THEY HAVE A SECOND HOME AND A VERY CLOSE BOND BETWEEN FAMILY MEMBERS WHO COME TO SEE THEM AT THE FIRE HOUSE WHEN THEY ARE AWAY FROM HOME.
